Following last night’s Class D1 Title game, W-C Athletic Director Scott Mellville put things in perfect perspective for someone who was on the outside looking in on the Wildcats Sectional Championship run this season.

“After all the years of 2-17, this is great,” said Melville as he walked onto the court to snap a few photos of his school’s Girls Basketball team as they awaited the Championship trophy.

Perhaps great was an understatement.

As the final buzzer rang out at Letchworth High School last night, the entire Wheatland-Chili bench and fan section began to erupt with joy from winning the Class D1 Title. Not only that, but you could see the true sense of satisfaction on each of the players’ faces following the game, as if to say, “Whew. Finally.”

The Wildcats were a favorite within their class all season long – there is no other way around it. After blowing through the GR League, and through the early rounds of the Sectional Tournament, if Wheatland went on to lose the finals last night – I would have been shocked.

However, when you’re talking about a school and community who has had very little to cheer about for the past many years, in terms of overall basketball success, nothing comes easy – and nothing feels guaranteed. And there was no better proof of that than witnessing the Wildcats’ reaction to seizing Sectional success last night.

Congratulations to Wheatland-Chili, and their entire community – it’s been a long time coming.
