Last night at Barker HS the Alexander Boys Basketball picked up win number one in 2017-2018 – a 59-44 victory over the Red Raiders. It was not only win number one for the Trojans, but also their head coach Wayne Hanley, who took over the Alexander program this year after a brief hiatus which began in 2013. He was previously head coach of the Trojans from 2001-2013.

“It’s always great to start the season off with a win,” said Hanley after the game. “But it’s just one game. We still have a lot to improve on and need to get better every day.”

The Trojan big men carried the day for their offense, as senior Erik Scharlau scored a game-high 18 points and 6’5″ junior Ryan Davis chipped in 15 of his own for Alexander. Senior guard (pictured above) Chris McClinic added 12 points in the win.

Alexander only put up 4 three-pointers in last night’s action, but Hanley says it’s not a lack of capable shooters which forced them to go post-heavy on offense – but rather the team taking what was given to them.

“We only shot four three-pointers (tonight),” remarked the Trojans head coach. “We definitely have players who can shoot the three, but we didn’t need to shoot many (tonight) because we were much-bigger inside.”

For Barker in the loss, Austin Sullivan led the way with 15 points.

Next up for the Trojans will be a road matchup with GR Power Pembroke on December 5th.
