What a performance from Attica last night on their home floor.

Having two previous disappointing GR League losses to their record (Oakfield, Lyndonville), and with an undefeated team coming in last night, the Blue Devils played about as well as they have in the past two years that I have watched them – which may signal a turning point for this talented bunch.

Beginning the game vs Elba in a bit of a rut offensively due to the Lancers strong interior defense, the Devils weathered the initial storm set forth by their opponent and were able to take a 12-8 lead heading into the second quarter. The Devils’ 6’5″ junior Owen Thompson propelled their attack in the early going, as he hit a couple of threes during the first in order to give his team the advantage.

During the second quarter it was more of the same from the home team, as an 18-12 frame in favor of Attica brought the score to 30-20 heading into the half. Devils’ senior Colden George was the top-performer during the second, as 7 points from the point guard (including 1 three-pointer) helped extend their lead.

Throughout the second half, George continued to play well offensively, but it was his continued presence on the defensive end which perhaps made the biggest impact for his team. Set with the responsibility of guarding Elba sharpshooter Henry Pflaumer throughout the night, George did a nice job staying out of foul trouble while also limiting his adversary to just 4 total points.

“Colden staying out of foul trouble is so important,” said Attica head coach Rob Crowley following the game.

In addition to George’s impressive defense, Attica junior Levi Snyder also played a strong game in defending Elba’s big man John Hochmuth – who may be the most forceful inside presence in the GR League.

Throughout the final two quarters, Attica outscored the Lancers 22-15 in order to put the game away. They won by a final score of 52-35.

In total vs the Lancers, George finished his impressive night for the Devils with 21 total points, 7 rebounds, 5 assists, and 5 steals, while Thompson was just behind with 18 points of his own. Nick Perry rounded out the list of top-performers for the home team – as he chipped in 7 points and 10 rebounds, including a few big buckets.

For Elba, Pflaumer had 4 points while Hochmuth totaled 12.

Next up for Elba will be a tough matchup with neighbor Byron-Bergen, while Attica will host Kendall.
