A big first quarter propelled the Batavia Boys Basketball team to an 11-point halftime advantage over visiting Pittsford Mendon tonight, but the Devils were unable to maintain their early offensive output during the second half, and were forced to grit their teeth and pull out a tough win over the Vikings by the final score of 56-50.

The Devils were ahead for the entire game, before a quick spurt from Mendon gave them the lead for the first time with 2:15 to play in the contest.

However, refusing to fold, Batavia’s Steve Gilebarto and Antwan Odom both came through with big buckets down the stretch, and the home team managed to overcome their opponent by the slim six-point margin.

“I was really proud of my guys,” said Batavia head coach Buddy Brasky following the game. “They threw a junk defense at us that we weren’t really ready for, and we turned to other guys to step up when they took away Tee Sean (Ayala), and (Steve) Gilebarto.”

Ayala was held to just 7 points in the game, while Gilebarto finished with a team-high 16 points despite facing the different style of defense as he continued to heat up.

“Naz (Pratt), Jonathan (Liciaga), and Antwan (Odom) really stepped up (late in the game) and sparked us to the victory,” finished Brasky.

Liciaga netted 10 points to go with 7 rebounds, while Odom dropped 11 points in the win. Pratt finished with 8 points, 5 rebounds, and 5 assists.

For Mendon in the loss Jacob Shadders, and Michael Harrington each scored 18 points.

With the win, Batavia is now 2-0 and looks ahead to a matchup with HF-L on Friday night.
