Death, taxes, and the Batavia Baseball team winning the Batavia Rotary Club Tournament.

It was business as usual for the Blue Devils on Saturday, as the titan of Genesee County baseball rolled to the tourney title. Batavia has won the Rotary Championship every year since 2008.

The Batavia offense was on fire on Saturday. The Blue Devils have struggled offensively in the tougher games on their schedule this season, and this weekend could be a positive sign moving forward.

In game one on Saturday afternoon, Attica and Notre Dame squared off in a battle between two tough GR League squads, but it was the Devils getting the better of the Irish by a final of 17-1. The game lasted only five innings due to the mercy rule. Sam Cusmano picked up the win on the hill for Attica, allowing only 3 hits while striking out just 2. Offensively for the Devils Joe Aguglia finished the day 2/5 with 2 RBI, Matt Travis went 4/4 with 2 RBI, and Logan Veley added a 4/4 day including 2 RBI.

Game two featured another blowout, as Batavia knocked off Oakfield 7-0 behind a near no-hitter from BHS hurler Hunter Mazur. He picked up the complete game win over the Hornets, and allowed only a single hit. Griffin Della Penna and Jake Humes sparked the Batavia offense as both recorded 2 RBI.

The championship game was another lopsided affair, with Batavia getting the better of Attica by a final mark of 10-4. Attica made things interesting in the middle innings, cutting their initial 7-0 deficit to 7-4, but it wasn’t enough as BHS continued to pour it on and won by the six-run margin. Jake Humes picked up the win for the Blue Devils, providing 6 innings of 3-hit ball while striking out 5. The Batavia offense was on fire throughout the contest, with Sam Sallome (2/3, 3B, 3 runs scored, Della Penna (3/4, 2B, 2 RBI), and Jordyn Schmidt (2/4, 2 runs scored, RBI) leading the way.

Della Penna was awarded the tournament MVP.
