Here are the recipients of the Batavia’s Best 2016-2017 HS Basketball Awards:

BOYS

MVP

Tucker Bezon (Elba) Bezon was the driving force behind Elba’s Sectional Title run this season. On both sides of the court, his ability to match-up with the other team’s best player on a nightly basis was impressive. Tucker also won the fan vote for MVP by a sizable marging.

Offensive Player of the Year

Brandon Burke (Byron-Bergen) – Brandon led the Bees to a Sectional Quarterfinal appearance, scoring upwards of 20 points per game on several occasions throughout the year, while also doing plenty on the offensive boards in order to earn his team second-chance opportunities – and did a nice job getting his teammates involved as well. He finished on-top in the fan vote to boot.

Defensive Player of the Year

Erik Scharlau (Alexander) – Erik was as underrated as they come this past season. His ability to control the interior for the Trojans, while also playing better perimeter defense than most big men in the area served as Alexander’s strong point defensively.

Most Improved Player

Ryan Douglas (Oakfield) – Ryan’s ability to transform into an all-around player for the Hornets this season was noteworthy to say the least. As a sophomore, he was nothing but a bench player for his team, but as a junior he was a major factor in OA’s run to the Sectional Semifinals.

Underclassman of the Year

Antwan Odom (Batavia) – Antwan (sophomore) was far-and-away the most-impressive underclassman throughout the area during this past season. Scoring 30 points on one occasion, and 20+ on a few others in the tough Monroe County League, he was Batavia’s second-best player and will be again next season as a junior.

Coach of the Year

Ciaci Zambito (Elba) – Coach Zambito led Elba to their first Sectional Title since 2005 – which he was also a part of as a junior guard 12 years ago. His ability to re-establish the tradition he was a part of back then is certainly deserving of this recognition.

GIRLS

MVP

Gill Flint (Cal-Mum) – Gill was the most-gifted player in the area as a senior this past season, leading her team on both offense and defense. Her efforts were irreplaceable for the Lady Raiders – who fell just short of their third-straight Sectional Title.

Offensive Player of the Year

Emily Reynolds (Elba) – Despite an injury which forced her out during the final third of the regular season, Emily proved to be tough to stop on the interior for the Lady Lancers during her time on the floor – which included an MVP performance when she returned for Elba’s Sectional Final win over Romulus. She also won the fan vote.

Defensive Player of the Year

Olivia George (Alexander) – Olivia was one of the most-aggressive defenders in the area throughout this past season. Her effort and leadership is what sparked her team all season – including in their upset win over Oakfield in the Sectional Quarterfinals.

Most Improved Player

Makayla Hilchey (Oakfield) – In addition to winning the fan voteMakayala was an important player for Oakfield during their 1-loss regular season. She went from just 2 ppg a season ago, to over 10 ppg this past year. Despite a tough end to the Hornets season (loss to ALEX in Sec. V Qtrfnls), Hilchey and several of her teammates will be back to repeat their success next year.

Underclasswoman of the Year

Ryann Stefaniak (Batavia) – Ryann was Batavia’s best player as a sophomore in a season which the Lady Devils were coming off of several losses due to graduation. Her ability to improve will be fun to watch over the next few seasons. In 2016-2017, she averaged 17 points per game.

Coach of the Year

Tom McCulley (Notre Dame) – Coach McCulley made it all the way to the Far West Regional in his first year at the helm of the ND Girls team. Next season, with plenty returning to a talented Lady Irish squad, I expect his team to repeat their success.
