Upon watching Luca this season, his hard work on the court, as well as his overall ability to play the game have both stood out. Tonight, going into what has the potential to be his final game as a member of the ND basketball team, Luca will have one last chance to show his talents in a matchup with the York Golden Knights.

AB: What’s it like playing three different sports throughout high school?

LZ: It’s a very fun experience that allows me to bond with so many different teammates over the years.

AB: As a three-sport athlete, has it made it difficult to excel at each sport?

LZ: While I do believe I could be better if I just played one sport, I enjoy all three sports so much that I wouldn’t want to give up one sport. Also, there are many benefits, competition and leadership-wise, of being a part of multiple teams.

AB: What has helped you become one of your team’s top-players in each sport?

LZ: Almost every one of our top player play multiple sports because we are a school with a limited number of students. Whatever sport I am in, I try to give 100% in games and during practices. Working hard over the summer, whether it’s lifting or drills, has helped me and my teammates get better.

AB: Do you believe what you have acquired from those other sports have helped you in basketball this season and in season’s prior?

LZ: Absolutely. The most important things that other sports have helped translate to basketball are the experiences of being on teams that are trying to win a sectional title, and developing relationships with teammates that help better our performances.

AB: Lastly, although it has been an up-and-down season for you guys, what do you believe will help you make some noise in the Sectional tournament?

LZ: Three things have to happen for our team if we wish to make a run. We have to work hard on the defensive end, move the ball and take smart shots offensively, and capitalize at the end of games under pressure. We have struggled greatly in achieving all three things in a single game throughout the season, but the good thing is that we have tremendous potential, and when we execute those things during practice, we look great. We just have to go into each game with an attitude to survive and advance and with the mentality that we can make some upsets if we play well.

With one last chance to prove he and his teammates have what it take to make a run at a sectional title, expect this Irish squad to come out swinging tonight vs York.
