In order to remain undefeated and in the top spot both in their division, and within the entire league, the Elba Boys Basketball team overcame a tough Pembroke squad by a final score of 45-36. A game that was a bit closer than the final may indicate, late free throws from the Lancers helped seal the deal on Wednesday night.

The game began with Pembroke taking an immediate 3-0 lead as Kyle Ludwig was money on a deep three-ball. Following the big shot to start things off, Elba immediately regained control of the game, as 2 three-pointers from Henry Pflaumer to go with a free throw from Richard Flores put the Lancers out in front 7-3 with 3:29 left in the first quarter.

The next few minutes would continue to go Elba’s way, and to conclude the first the score was 10-6 in favor of Elba.

The early portion of the second quarter was much of the same, as Pembroke continued to struggle offensively following the early lead, and Elba continued to knock down shot, after shot from the outside. However, refusing to completely give way to the Lancers, the Dragons hung around going into halftime. Heading into the break, the score was 21-17 Elba – who had suddenly gone cold to conclude the frame.

Neither side was able to get many solid looks inside during the first half, as both the Dragons and Lancers were really relying on the outside shot to fuel their offense.

To begin the second half Elba quickly turned up the heat on the Dragons and grabbed a sudden 10-point advantage with about 6:00 to go in the third quarter. But again continuing to battle on both ends, the Dragons just wouldn’t go away and at the end of the third they trailed by just 5. Over the next few minutes Pembroke continued to cut into the Elba lead, and with 4:00 remaining in the game they had knocked the Elba lead back down to just 2 at 33-31 following a three-ball from Ludwig.

But as they had done all game long, whenever Pembroke was able to get close to regaining the advantage – Elba stepped up.

Over the final few minutes the Lancers found a few transition opportunities to go with some late free throws, and when it was all said and done they held on to win by nine.

Prior to last night’s game, Pembroke and Elba had each led their respective divisions in the GR League Standings. The Dragons with 1 loss coming in, and the Lancers with none, whoever won this game was set to become the new leader in the clubhouse. Behind strong shooting from the perimeter, and solid defense when it counted, Elba is now that team.

Sitting at 10-0, 6-0 in the league, the Lancers will be the team to beat for the time being.
