The Oakland A’s contributed to history on Tuesday by hiring the first female coach in MLB, Justine Siegal. Speaking about her new job in baseball, Siegal said to Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle, “It’s a dream come true. The A’s are a first-class organization, and it will be an honor to wear their uniform.”

Siegal will serve as a guest instructor for Oakland’s Instructional League club to begin her career in MLB, which begins shortly after the first woman was hired to coach in the NBA, as well as the NFL. She is 40 years old and received the opportunity to coach in MLB after completing the Major League Scouting Bureau school, as well as obtaining her Ph.D. in sport and exercise psychology.

During her stay at the A’s Instructional League, Siegal will have a wide range of duties which will include everything from hitting infield practice to providing her input during coaches sessions – according to Oakland assistant general manager David Forst, per Slusser.

“Justine knows that nothing has been promised, but we’re not ruling that out,” said Forst concerning the hiring of Siegal.

As Bleacher Report pointed out in their article pertaining to this story, the NHL remains as the sole member of the four major sports yet to employ a female.

I find that interesting, knowing that hockey and basketball are the only two of the major four sports which a wide range of females indeed play professionally.

Perhaps the lack of a female coach in the NHL will soon be addressed.
