The Section V Baseball Tournament begins tonight, with Lyndonville, and Le Roy returning as local teams who hope to defend their championship. Here is a brief preview of what to expect in the coming weeks:

Class AA

Seeding: 1. Victor; 2. McQuaid; 3. Penfield; 4. Fairport; 5. Webster Schroeder  6. Webster Thomas; 7. Rush-Henrietta; 8. Franklin; 9. Hilton; 10. Edison Tech; 11. Churchville-Chili; 12. Gates-Chili

Tournament Prediction: This is a difficult bracket to forecast. From the outside looking in, AA may provide a bit of chaos in the coming weeks. When it comes down to it, I’m going with the top-seed Victor Blue Devils to win it all, but don’t feel all that comfortable with my pick.

 Class A1

Seeding: 1. Canandaigua; 2. Pittsford Mendon; 3. Brockport; 4. Irondequoit; 5. Greece Athena; 6. Pittsford Sutherland; 7. Eastridge; 8. Brighton; 9. Spencerport; 10. Greece Arcadia

Tournament Prediction: The Canandaigua Braves is the top-dog in Class A1, but Pittsford Mendon has been nipping at their heels all season. I see this bracket as a two-team race for the Title. Expect an intense title game if these two squads are to meet, but I’ll go with Canandaigua to come out as Sectional Champ.

Class A2

Seeding: 1. East High; 2. School of the Arts; 3. Honeoye Falls-Lima; 4. Batavia; 5. Leadership Academy; 6. Wayne; 7. Monroe; 8. Aquinas; 9. Wilson; 10. Geneva; 11. NE Douglas

Tournament Prediction: In my opinion Batavia and HF-L are the leaders in A2 and, having split two matchups during the regular season, could be on a collision course towards the finals this year. BHS has never won a Section V Baseball Title during current head coach Rick Saunders’ successful tenure, but this is the year for the hometown team. Give me the Blue Devils.

Class B

Seeding: 1. Newark; 2. Midlakes; 3. Wellsville; 4. Penn Yan; 5. Bath-Haverling ; 6. Livonia; 7. Attica; 8. Hornell; 9. Dansville, 10. Mynderse; 11. Waterloo; 12. Palmyra-Macedon; 13. Wayland-Cohocton; 14. Greece Odyssey; 15. Greece Olympia

Tournament Prediction: I would be crazy to pick against Wellsville in Class B. The tradition which the Lions have built under Section V’s winningest coach Dennis Miles has been mighty impressive, and I think they’ll win another title this year. Local squad Attica will have a chance to advance in the early rounds, but I don’t anticipate the Blue Devils making it past the semifinals. Newark and Midlakes each pulled top-two seeds, but their regular season schedules left me uninspired.

Class C1

Seeding: 1. Avon; 2. Gananda; 3. Williamson; 4. Sodus; 5. Pembroke; 6. Letchworth; 7. Le Roy; 8. East Rochester; 9. Addison; 10. Holley; 11. Canisteo-Greenwood; 12. Marcus Whitman; 13. North Rose-Wolcott; 14. Byron-Bergen

Tournament Prediction: There are a long list of quality teams in Class C1, where I view each of the top-eight seeds as title contenders. Avon is the leader of the pack, while last year’s champ Le Roy sits in the weeds, waiting to pounce as the seven seed. In between those two are teams such as GanandaLetchworth, and Pembroke, who are all capable of upsets in the later rounds. If you forced me to choose I would pick the top-seeded Braves to win it all, but they will be tested.

Class C2

Seeding: 1. Red Jacket; 2. Geneseo; 3. South Seneca/Romulus; 4. Campbell-Savona; 5. Oakfield; 6. Warsaw; 7. Caledonia-Mumford; 8. Lyons; 9. Perry/Mt. Morris; 10. Alexander; 11. Cuba-Rushford; 12. Bloomfield; 13. Keshequa; 14. Red Creek

Tournament Prediction: Although Red Jacket has ran through the competition this year, they didn’t endure all that tough of a regular season schedule, which leaves plenty to prove for the Indians. Geneseo fell just short of a title in Class C1 last year, and with the move down, I am picking them to win the Class C2 Championship in 2018. Of the three local squads within this classification, I give Cal-Mum the best shot to advance past the early rounds.

Class D1

Seeding: 1. Honeoye; 2. Bolivar-Richburg; 3. Notre Dame; 4. Lima Christian; 5. Fillmore; 6. Alfred-Almond; 7. Charles G. Finney School; 8. York; 9. Lyndonville; 10. Naples; 11. Kendall; 12. Clyde Savannah; 13. Pavilion  14. Dundee

Tournament Prediction: It will take a lot for the competition to knock off top-seed Honeoye in the coming weeks, but I could see Notre Dame making things interesting if they are to meet the Bulldogs, a team which upset them in the postseason last year. The Irish will be looking for revenge. Also look out for two-seed Bolivar-Richburg, who hasn’t lost a game since April 2. In the end, I’m picking Honeoye, but I don’t think it will be easy for them.

Class D2

Seeding: 1. Belfast; 2. Arkport/Canaseraga; 3. Avoca; 4. Scio; 5. Genesee Valley; 6. Bradford; 7. Northstar; 8. Prattsburgh; 9. Whitesville; 10. Friendship; 11. Andover; 12. Hammondsport

Tournament Prediction: The top-five seeds in Class D2 will battle it out in what I expect to be an exciting classification. I’ll pick Belfast to win it all, but don’t feel as if it’s a sure thing for the Bulldogs.
