The second round is complete, and now 32 teams remain as the Section V Boys Basketball Tournament moves on to the Semifinals. Just one local squad has survived to this point, while the other 13 have been eliminated.

Moving forward, I’ll keep you updated on each classification, with an increased focus on Pembroke – the only local team which is still alive.

Here is an updated look at the Section V Boys Basketball Tournament as we approach the Semifinal Round. All brackets are via the Section V Boys Basketball website:

Class AA

Updated Seeding: 1. Fairport; 2. Rush-Henrietta; 3. Gates-Chili; 4. Webster Thomas; 5. McQuaid; 6. University Prep; 7. Hilton; 8. Bishop Kearney; 9. Edison Tech; 10. Penfield; 11. Churchville-Chili; 12. Victor; 13. Webster-Schroeder; 14. Aquinas

Quarterfinal Recap: A bit of craziness ensued during the quarterfinal round, and we now head to the semis with a 1-seed, 5-seed, 6-seed, and 7-seed. #7 Hilton over #2 Rush-Henrietta was the big upset of the weekend, as the Cadets will now move on to face #6 University Prep – who pulled off a quarterfinal upset of their own, over #3 Gates-Chili.

Intriguing Semifinal Matchup: #1 Fairport vs #5 McQuaid – McQ beat FAIR during the regular season. This game should come down to the wire.

 Class A1

Updated Seeding: 1. Greece Athena; 2. Irondequoit; 3. Pittsford Sutherland; 4. Pittsford Mendon; 5. Eastridge; 6. Canandaigua; 7. Spencerport; 8. Brockport; 9. Brighton; 10. Greece Arcadia; 11. Franklin

Quarterfinal Recap: All four of the top-seed advanced to the semifinals. Nothing to see here.

Intriguing Semifinal Matchup: #1 Greece Athena vs #4 Pittsford Mendon – these two teams split two regular season matchups. Another one that should be tight until the end.

Class A2

Updated Seeding: 1. Leadership Academy; 2. Wayne; 3. Batavia; 4. NE Douglas; 5. Wilson Magnet; 6. Honeoye Falls-Lima; 7. Monroe; 8. SOTA; 9. East High; 10. Geneva; 11. Vertus

Quarterfinal Recap: The lone upset in Class A2 over the weekend was #6 HF-L over local team #3 Batavia. With the win, the Cougars took the season series over the Devils by a 2-1 tally. The remaining top-four seeds moved to the semis.

Intriguing Semifinal Matchup: #2 Wayne vs #6 Honeoye Falls-Lima – WAY beat HF-L earlier this year, but that was the first game of the season. The Cougars are coming into this one with a full head of steam following an upset of #3 Batavia.

Class B

Updated Seeding: 1. Mynderse; 2. Penn Yan; 3. Livonia; 4. Hornell; 5. Greece Odyssey; 6. World of Inquiry; 7. Palmyra-Macedon; 8. Wellsville; 9. Newark, 10. Wayland-Cohocton; 11. Midlakes; 12. Bath-Haverling; 13. Dansville; 14. Waterloo; 15. Greece Olympia; 16. Attica

Quarterfinal Recap: #5 Greece Odyssey over #4 Hornell was the only upset of the quarterfinals, although I saw this one coming – which was one of my only good predictions of this postseason.

Intriguing Semifinal Matchup: #1 Mynderse vs #5 Greece Odyssey – Odyssey plays an extremely tough regular season schedule. They’ll be ready for the Blue Devils, and I expect them to win.

Class C1

Updated Seeding: 1. Northstar Christian; 2. Pembroke; 3. Addison; 4. Le Roy; 5. Marcus Whitman; 6. Avon; 7. Gananda; 8. East Rochester; 9. Sodus; 10. Canisteo-Greenwood; 11. Byron-Bergen; 12. Williamson; 13. Early College; 14. Red Creek; 15. Holley; 16. North Rose-Wolcott; 17. Letchworth

Quarterfinal Recap: #4 Le Roy was beaten by #5 Marcus Whitman over the weekend, while #6 Avon dropped #3 Addison. #1 Northstar Christian and #2 Pembroke advanced as favorites, but will finally be tested during the semifinals.

Intriguing Semifinal Matchup: #2 Pembroke vs #6 Avon – Avon is better than their seed indicates. After nearly being upset in the quarterfinals, Pembroke could be in for another tough game. Tune in tonight for updates from this one.

Class C2

Updated Seeding: 1. Perry; 2. Cal-Mum; 3. Lyons; 4. C.G. Finney; 5. Oakfield; 6. Alexander; 7. Cuba-Rushford; 8. Rochester Academy; 9. Bloomfield; 10. South Seneca; 11. Warsaw; 12. Geneseo; 13. Red Jacket; 14. Rochester Prep; 15. Campbell-Savona; 16. Marion; 17. Keshequa

Quarterfinal Recap: Local team #2 Cal-Mum was stunned by #7 Cuba-Rushford in the quarterfinals, while the other top-four seeds advanced to the semifinals. It was a tough loss for the Raiders, as they had championship aspirations this season.

Intriguing Semifinal Matchup: #1 Perry vs #4 CG Finney – I wouldn’t be surprised if the Falcons upset the Yellow Jackets in this one. Finney is athletic, and can shoot the three – both of which are ingredients for an upset.

Quarterfinal Recap: Local team #2 Notre Dame was upset by #10 Naples on Saturday, while #6 Honeoye defeated #3 Genesee Valley. The Irish were dominated by the Big Green, who were simply on fire throughout the contest.

Intriguing Semifinal Matchup: #6 Honeoye vs #10 Naples – the two rivals square-off for the third time this season. Honeoye won the previous two meetings.
