Following a brief hiatus which saw several classifications play their Finals games at various locations last season, all Section V Boys Basketball Finals games are headed back to Blue Cross Arena in 2017-2018 – the longtime home of SVBB for many years.
The ‘Big House’, as it’s affectionately known around these parts, forced Section V to look elsewhere for many of their Boys Basketball Finals last season due to a scheduling conflict and dropping attendance, but Boys Basketball Chairman Jeff Purficato recently told the Democrat and Chronicle that a thee-year agreement is now in place to keep the games inside the arena moving forward. Last year, only the Class AA and Class B Finals were played at Blue Cross.
“It was always scheduling (which led to moving games outside the War Memorial),” Purificato told the D&C. “Cost is always a problem. Sponsors help offset costs. Sponsors are down. We always look at costs. Basketball has been the biggest money-maker for as long as I can remember. Attendance has dropped, like attendance anywhere (in other sports) has dropped.”
This is big news for local basketball programs with hopes of winning a Sectional Title. Holding the Finals in the Blue Cross Arena is a great Section V tradition, and I’m glad that it’s back.
