Several local grapplers record notable performances at Byron-Bergen, Holley Wrestling Tournaments

Over the weekend, several high school wrestling squads from throughout the area came together at Byron-Bergen High School for the Bees annual Tournament, where many local grapplers finished on top of the podium in first place within their respective weight classes.



Beginning at 99 lbs Travis Kauffman of Attica defeated Rashawn Bloom of Medina by major decision (11-2) in the final.

Next was Byron-Bergen’s Chad Toal – who finished in first at 132 lbs – as he defeated Austin Bourgeois of Chataqua Lake 9-5 in the championship match.

Following Toal was Mason Compton (Attica) who won the 152 lbs crown, overcoming East Rochester’s Mario Vazquez by major decision – 8-0 in the final.

Defending NYSPHSAA Champ Matt Gaiser (Alexander) began his tournament schedule with a pin in the 182 lbs final. It took Gaiser 0:55 to stick Ben Restivo of Albion.

Lastly, Josh Barber (Batavia) was atop the podium at 285 lbs, as Caleb Crandall of Wayne fell to the Blue Devils’ newcomer by a 8-1 decision.

Gaiser and Toal were honored with the two Most Outstanding Wrestler Awards.



In other HS Wrestling action, at the Holley Team Tournament, the Hawks finished in 2nd place as a squad – earning victories over Campbell-Savona (54-15), Eastridge (48-33), and North Rose-Wolcott (57-18). Their lone loss was to tournament champ Greece (37-21).

Individually for the Hawks, Dawson Custer earned 4 wins on the day, while Tristyn Moyer, Cade Aina, Dylan Spellan, Jayden Pieniaszek, Jeremy Browe, Frank Flynn, and Hunter McLean.
