For the first time all season, the Notre Dame hockey team was unable to overcome their opponent last night – falling to the Geneseo Lakers by a final score of 6-4. A great game from start to finish, the Irish simply could not battle back from a slow start – and eventually allowed a late empty-netter to lose the game by two goals.

Thursday’s game began with the Lakers seizing an immediate 2-0 advantage over the Irish, and with 3:20 remaining in the first period ND was scrambling to rebound. Unable to do so until the second period, ND’s Ryan Webster would eventually light the lamp for the Irish on a breakaway goal which came just about a minute into the frame.

However, just after the Webster goal, Geneseo would also answer with a goal of their own, as a mess in front of the net eventually led to an ugly goal from the Lakers with about 8:45 left in the second. With the goal, it was now 3-1 Geneseo.

Refusing to give way, though, the Irish continued to battle throughout the remainder of the second, and were able to cut the deficit back down to one – but with little time left in the period the Lakers were able to squeeze two more goals by ND goaltender Ethan Conrad. Heading to the final frame, the score was now 5-2 Geneseo.

Although things looked bleak for the home team, on the bright side for the Irish, though, they would begin the third with a 4-3 man advantage for the first minute followed up by a 5-4 for the two minutes following that. This was their chance to get back into the game – and they made the most of it.

Beginning with a Cameron Clark goal on the 4-3, Notre Dame proved that they would not go away quietly with 14:17 to play – down 5-3. However, the next several minutes would pass without much from either side, and with under two minutes to play the score remained 5-3.

But with time winding down, ND’s Ryan Webster again found the back of the net in clutch fashion, and with 1:11 to go the score was now 5-4. Things were starting to get interesting.

However, unfortunately for the Irish, over the course of the final minute they were forced to pull their goalie – which eventually led to another Lakers goal, ending the game with the score 6-4.

The loss marks the end to what was a fantastic win streak by the Irish to begin the year, and with two matchups vs the Lakers remaining on their schedule – I’m sure they will have their day in the sun when it’s all said and done.
