Here is a brief preview of the 2018 Wheatland-Chili Track and Field team:
Wheatland-Chili Wildcats (GR)
Season Outlook: The Girls team is enjoying increased numbers this season. Despite an advancement from Class D to Class C, the Wildcats hope to have a few of their athletes walk away with Section V Titles once again this year.
The Boys team also has greater numbers than they’re typically accustomed to, but remain a young team looking to take a step forward. The Wildcats’ goal this season is to cover as many events as possible and make a solid showing come postseason time.
Key Players: Lindsey Clar – Lindsey is working towards another State Qualifier berth this season, as she is the top-distance runner for the Wildcats.; Abigail Smith – Abigail experienced great success in the Long Jump last season, and is hoping to spread her success to the Triple Jump in 2018.; Katherine Vonglis – Katherine made an impact in the field last season, and will be the Wildcats’ top-thrower this year.; David Domina – David is looking forward to another successful year in the 200 and 400 M Run.; Kevin Bayley – Kevin is a versatile athlete who wants to finish his high school career with a strong campaign.; Dez Walker – Dez is excited to improve his performance in the Long Jump this season.
Coach’s Quote: “Despite the move up from Class D to C, (we) hope to field some champions at sectionals again this year,” said Wheatland-Chili Girls coach Stephanie DeRue. “We are excited to have a few more girls come out for the team than in years prior.”
“As a relatively small team, it will be a struggle for us to cover all events,” said Wheatland-Chili Boys coach Rachael Rathke. “However, we hope to make a decent showing in Genesee Regionals and improve upon our 8-10 (record) from last year.”
