Now that the selection process has run its course, it is time to select the winners of the 2017 Batavia’s Best Spring Sports Awards. I used a variety of methods in order to do so, including but not limited to the fan nomination process, as well as speaking with individuals who are involved with each sport at the ground level. I hope you can appreciate my selections, even if you do not agree with them, but if you do take issue with any that I have chosen, feel free to comment below.

Here are the award winners:

Boys Spring Athlete of the Year

Brandon Burke (Byron-Bergen Track and Field)

• Byron-Bergen’s Burke wins High Jump at NYSPHSAA Track and Field Championships

Runner-Up: Eric Neace (Lyndonville Baseball)

Girls Spring Athlete of the Year

Carli Bogue (Elba Softball)

• Elba Softball drops GR league mate Lyndonville – Elba’s Bogue K’s 16

Runner-Up: Kiaya Franklin (Batavia Track and Field)

Boys Underclassman of the Year

Reece Tresco (Le Roy Baseball)

• CINDERELLA: Eight-seed Le Roy defeats Geneseo in Section V Class C1 Baseball Finals

Runner-Up: Zach Johnson (Lyndonville Baseball)

Girls Underclasswoman of the Year

Madison Howard (Elba Softball)

• Elba Softball wins Alexander Softball Tournament with decisive win over Trojans in the Championship

Runner-Up: Grace Walker (Cal-Mum Softball)

Boys Coach of the Year

Shane Price (Lyndonville Baseball)

• Wells shuts down Fillmore – Lyndonville Baseball wins Section V Class D1 Championship

Runner-Up: Ieon Koukides (Le Roy Baseball)

Girls Coach of the Year

Joe Moore (Lyndonville Softball)

• Lyndonville Softball overpowers Alfred-Almond – Lady Tigers join baseball team as SecV D1 Champs

Runner-Up: Kevin Walkowski (Batavia Softball)

Diamond Dinger

Eric Neace (Lyndonville Baseball)

• Lyndonville Baseball overcomes non-league opponent Roy-Hart – Neace mashes for Tigers

Runner-Up: Kyle Casey (Attica Baseball)

King of the Hill

Casey Radka (Batavia Baseball)

• Radka pitches well once again, as Batavia Baseball goes on the road and shuts out Medina

Runner-Up: Dylan Hillabush (Holley Baseball)

Hallmark Hands

Evan Bender (Notre Dame Baseball)

• Notre Dame Baseball remains unblemished following another walk-off win, over Oakfield/Elba

Runner-Up: Josh Laurie (Le Roy Baseball)

Silver Swinger

Meghan Mietlicki (Cal-Mum Softball)

• Cal-Mum Softball walks-off on Bath-Haverling – Raiders are 6-0 heading into today’s LR Tourney

Runner-Up: Hannah Paolucci (Alexander Softball)

Queen of the Circle

Carli Bogue (Elba Softball)

• Bogue hurls no-hitter in Elba Softball’s season-opening win over Perry

Runner-Up: Samantha Tatarski (Pembroke Softball)

Titanium Tee

Matthew Genaway (Alexander Golf)

• Alexander’s Matt Genaway helps Section V Golf team win NYSPHSAA Championship

Runner-Up: Ben Pflaumer (Elba Golf)

Boys #TrackNation

• Ray, Zwolinski, Dressler, George, Kohorst, Doud, Vogel, Burke all multi-winners at Track Counties

Runner-Up:Butch Ray (Batavia Track and Field)

Girls #TrackNation

Kiaya Franklin (Batavia Track and Field)

• Batavia Track and Field sweeps Greece Olympia – Franklin, Cohen, Ray, Davis all double-winners

Runner-Up: Sophia Zwolinski (Pembroke Track and Field)
