For years, junior high school athletes looking to compete at the JV or Varsity level have had to endure a process termed the Selection/Classification Program in order to do so. However, after nearly 40 years of existence, the NYSED has recently decided that this program is obsolete and have given way to a new program called APP – or Athletic Placement Process – which will be implemented across the state this fall.

What are the major differences between the two you may ask? Well, the NYSED describes them as follows (according to a piece on NYSSWA website):

– There are no waivers available in the APP process, therefore a student must meet the appropriate standards of physical and emotional maturity, size, fitness, and skill, in order to qualify. (Previously waivers of maturation were permitted by school medical director and waivers of the physical fitness test were permitted by the NYSED)

– Students will now be required to receive administrative approval to selectively classify.

– The district medical director will determine a student’s physical maturity level, and assess the physical size of the student in relation to that of the students against whom the student would compete.

-The President’s Physical Fitness Test replaces the old, sport-specific test components.

As you can see there are several areas of concern for School Administration and coaches alike going forward into the fall season. To learn more about these specific concerns from those who are close to the situation, be sure to check out NYSSWA’s article on the subject located here.

What do you think? Will this process effect your school/team?

If so, how will it effect your school/team? Be sure to let us know by posting to our various social media outlets, emailing me at [email protected], or commenting below.

It will be interesting to see how this change plays out over the next several months.
