This was Batavia’s year.

Coming equipped with 5 seniors who had been around for quite some time, including the ‘Big Three’ of Tiara Filbert, Madison McCulley, and Sam Cecere, as well as a seasoned coach in Marty Hein who had led his team within arms reach of the pinnacle previously – the Lady Devils seemed to have all that it took to become a championship team in 2015-2016.

All that was left for them to do was go get it – and on Friday night they did just that.

Sparked by a fantastic all-around performance from their top-player Tiara Filbert (27 points) vs the Vikings, Batavia went on to win the Class A2 Finals by a final score of 53-42. In addition to Filbert’s strong effort, Sam Cecere also stepped up huge for her team in the win – scoring 16 points. The Sectional Title is the first ever for the Batavia Girls Basketball program.

Upon watching this group play over the past few years, although proving to be one of the tougher teams within their league and classification time and time again, they never seemed to be able to get over the hump when it counted – in the Sectional Tournament.

However, beginning with a stellar performance vs HFL in the semis this year, coupled with a dominating showing vs nemesis Mendon last night, the Lady Devils were able to get over that hump for the first time ever, and prove once and for all – they are the best girls basketball team in school history.

Congratulations to the Lady Devils, along with their families and friends – Champions in 2016.
