Batavia took their first loss of the season in the finals of the Batavia Lions Club Tournament 57-45 to University Prep who won the tournament for the 2nd year in a row. Batavia struggled to score as they have all season shooting a measly 34% from the field, 21% from three and 50% from the free throw line.
Batavia was led by Malachi Chenault who had 13 points and 9 rebounds and Ryan Hogan with 10 points. The story was the show put on Jeenathan Williams of U Prep. He poured in 23 points, 6 of those coming on 3 thunderous slams. Batavia had no real answer for him all night, until it was too late in the game. Batavia’s lack of a consistent scoring option coupled with the inability to contain Williams and PG Isaiah Brinkley caused this game to get away from them.
In addition to Williams, U Prep also received a strong contribution from Brinkley, who made the All-Tournament team. The remainder of the All-Tournament team was Tyler Prospero of Notre Dame, Tommy Mattison of Albion, Tee Sean Ayala and Malachi Chenault of Batavia. The MVP went to Williams who was the clear choice in my mind as he was simply unstoppable.
Batavia will now look ahead to a road game Wednesday night against Greece Olympia.
