Here are the recipients of the Batavia’s Best 2016-2017 HS Wrestling Awards:

Dane Heberlein (Alexander) – Dane finished his career as a three-time state champ and was one of the most-impressive wrestlers throughout all of NYS during his senior season.

Heavyweight of the Year

Matt Gaiser (Alexander) – Matt’s rise to dominance this season was as quick as they come. Finishing fifth at states as a sophomore, during his junior season Gaiser ran through his competition – completing his year by pinning his opponent in the State Finals in order to become a NYSPHSAA Champ.

Middleweight of the Year

Dane Heberlein (Alexander) – The Trojans’ senior was simply outstanding this year.

Lightweight of the Year

Nick Young (Alexander) Nick finished fifth after reaching the semifinals in his weight class at the NYSPHSAA Championships – completing what was a coming-of-age season for the Trojans’ junior.

Coach of the Year

Rich Hannan (Byron-Bergen) – Coach Hannan did an outstanding job helping a long list of Bees wrestlers win postseason honors this year. Byron-Bergen also finished the Section V season as Sectional Champion.

Decisions were reached based upon the fan vote, as well as my opinion, and other factors.
