Section V Boys Soccer season is now underway, and several local teams expect to be able to make a run at a Championship season in 2017. A lot of experience returns to the GR League, and beyond, and I believe we will see a few area teams reach their goals this year. Here is my 2017 HS Boys Soccer Season Preview:

Attica

Head Coach: John Dickhut

Record Last Season: 1-16

Key Players: Dylan Meides, Zach Kowalewski, Seth Kirsch, Quincy Burg

Season Outlook: The Blue Devils return eight starters from a disappointing 2016 season. Last year, the Devils’ numbers were very low – causing them to pull athletes up from the JV-level to fill holes in the starting lineup. This year, they have 21 players ready to go and expect to be much-more competitive in 2017.

Batavia

Head Coach: Sean Donnellan

Record Last Season: 2-15

Key Players: Jake Stokes, Nate Hamilton, Matt Grover, Liam Miller

Season Outlook: The Blue Devils have been working diligently to turn their program around, and believe this year they have a talented young core which is capable of putting those wheels in motion.

Byron-Bergen/Elba

Head Coach: Ken Rogoyski

Record Last Season: 16-2-1

Key Players: Kylar Chambry, Adam Swapceinski, Wade Thompson

Season Outlook: Coming off of a fantastic 2016 season, the Bees are looking forward to another successful campaign this year.

Cal-Mum

Head Coach: Dave Veltre

Record Last Season: Not submitted

Key Players: Jon Boilard, David Morrison, Brandon Wilson

Season Outlook: The Red Raiders have a solid group of experienced athletes who are ready to finally break out and put C-M on the map. When head coach Dave Veltre began his coaching career at C-M, they only had about 20 players in the program between varsity and jv. Now, however, they are beginning to fill their program out with healthy rosters at every level, and they believe it’s time to win some games.

Holley

Head Coach: Dan Orbaker

Record Last Season: 13-3-3

Key Players: Patrick Bower, Jake Downey, Dalton Major, Erik Balys, Matt Skehan

Season Outlook: The Hawks believe they have another big year on the way, after falling in the Class C1 Semifinals in 2016. This is historically a very strong program, and should be one of the top-teams within the GR League once again.

Le Roy

Head Coach: Bob Hammer

Record Last Season: Not submitted

Key Players: Not submitted

Season Outlook: Le Roy has begun the 2017 season with a couple of strong victories. Expect another quality year from this group.

Pavilion

Head Coach: Matthew Roth

Record Last Season: 8-8-1

Key Players: Will Salamone, Garrett Didas, Jimmy Lee, Nick Cunningham, Jared Flicker

Season Outlook: Although they lost several key players from last year’s squad, many of this year’s returners gained quality experience last year and learned plenty about how to play the game correctly. Head coach Matt Roth is excited to see how his team develops and meshes throughout the season.

Pembroke

Head Coach: Aaron Burch

Record Last Season: 11-6-1

Key Players: Jamil Marable Jr., Casey Shaw, Jacob Howes, Lucas Glomb, Ben Perry Jr.

Season Outlook: Pembroke will join Holley, Byron-Bergen, and Wheatland-Chili amongst the GR League’s elite. They have perhaps the most-talented player in the league in Jamil Marable Jr., and fill out the remainder of their roster with experienced athletes who are ready to put their best foot forward.

Wheatland-Chili

Head Coach: Steve Call

Record Last Season: 9-9

Key Players: Joe Bordonaro, Adam Lund, Will Gebhardt, Kevin Bayly-Henshaw, Dom Ferro

Season Outlook: The Wildcat’s tragically lost their head coach Mike Skivington during the offseason, but have tried to ease the transition with familiar face Steve Call as head coach. They expect to be one of the top 4-5 teams in Section V Class D1 by season’s end.
