Last week, Girls Soccer teams throughout Section V took to the field and began 2017 regular season play, and over the next few months they will all try to make the journey towards a Championship. In order to gain a better perspective on which team’s Championship aspirations are realistic, however, check out my brief 2017 HS Girls Soccer season preview.

Alexander

Head Coach: Shane Sutton

Record Last Season: 9-7-1

Key Players: Lauren Hume, Alexis Breton, Macie Riggs

Season Outlook: The Trojans believe they can improve their record from a season ago, as they come equipped with several seniors who have experience playing at the varsity level.

Attica

Head Coach: Marissa Sell

Record Last Season: Not submitted

Key Players: Angela Aguglia, Karly Soncericker

Season Outlook: With a new head coach entering her first season at the varsity level, the Blue Devils are simply hoping to be more competitive in each of their games this season.

Batavia

Head Coach: Roger Hume

Record Last Season: 10-7

Key Players: Claire Zickl, Sophia Dinehart, Katie Moore, Bri Janes

Season Outlook: The Blue Devils lost Monroe County League Division 4 POY Maggie Cecere to graduation,, but believe they have a solid attack which will be able to fill the void she left behind. They feel they can score with any team on their schedule, but understand they need to reduce their Goals Against Average from a season ago if they hope to compete deep into the sectional tournament.

Byron-Bergen

Head Coach: Wayne Hill

Record Last Season: 15-3

Key Players: Leah Thompson, Makenzie Muoio, Miriam Tardy, Kelsey Fuller, Julia Menzie, Melissa MacCowan

Season Outlook: The Bees are expecting to win a Sectional Title this season, as their 2016 Title hopes were dashed after falling to eventual Champion Geneseo during Sectionals last year.

Cal-Mum

Head Coach: Chad Schalk

Record Last Season: Not submitted

Key Players: Not submitted

Season Outlook: The Red Raiders are typically one of the stronger programs in the area and I would expect they are in for another successful season in 2017.

Holley

Head Coach: Renee Wolf & Emily Harms (co-coaches)

Record Last Season: 2-12-3

Key Players: Madison Papaj

Season Outlook: The Hawks struggled in 2016 and are looking to get their heads back above water this season. Their goal is to reach .500 by year’s end, as they are looking for countless young player to stand out and help out all over the field.

Le Roy

Head Coach: Reilly Schwenebraten

Record Last Season: 7-9-2

Key Players: Abby Dambra, Bryn Luckey, Erin Cappotelli, Haley Scripp, Maddie Keister

Season Outlook: The Knights will endure a difficult schedule this season. but hope to get better as the season progress in order to play their best soccer come Sectional time.

Notre Dame

Head Coach: Jarrod Clark

Record Last Season: 9-8

Key Players: Callie McCulley, Emmy Keeler, Morgan Rhodes, Addyson DiMatteo

Season Outlook: The Irish had their first-ever winning season in 2016, and return plenty of talent from last year’s squad. They graduated only two seniors during the offseason and also believe they have a solid influx of new talent coming up in 2017. ND hopes to take the GR League Division II Title this year.

Oakfield

Head Coach: Dave Carpino

Record Last Season: 6-12

Key Players: Brenna Ilacqua, Lakin Woodward, Serina Velletta

Season Outlook: As the 14-seed in last year’s Sectional Tournament, OA defeated the 3-seed – which is a testament to how strong of league they play in during the regular year. This season, the Hornets are looking to grow as a group within their Division and come out with a better record than they did last season.

Pavilion

Head Coach: Nicole Wittmeyer

Record Last Season: 5-10-1

Key Players: Jordan Barrett, Emma Milligan, Chloe Schrier, Kim Davis, Taylor Heineman, Lizzy Penders

Season Outlook: The Gophers had several returning athletes put in great effort during the offseason, and their hard work showed through during the preseason – per their head coach. They hope to perform a bit better than they did as a team last season.

Pembroke

Head Coach: Mike Puckett

Record Last Season: 7-8-1

Key Players: Graze Krizen, Olivia Kohorst, Bethany Zwolinski, Sophia Zwolinski, Jessie Weaver

Season Outlook: This year’s Dragons squad has 11 seniors, and will hope to use their experience in order to improve their record from a season ago.

Wheatland-Chili

Head Coach: Gary Ward

Record Last Season: 22-1

Key Players: Abbey Callaghan, Hannah Callaghan, Cassie Parker, Lindsey Clark, Katherine Vonglis

Season Outlook: The Wildcats return 8 players from their 2016 State Championship team, which should make for another big year for this program. Head coach Gary Ward, who is going into his 36th season as leader of WCGVS, believes by season’s end this year’s squad could reach an even higher level than they did in 2016.
