Tonight I received word that Batavia Boys Basketball’s Jeff Redband will be attending Daemen College next fall on a full athletic scholarship. The Wildcats recently acquired ex-Canisius and Medaille head basketball coach Mike MacDonald (26 years collegiate experience), who has a long track record of success in the area.

At Medaille, MacDonald led the Mavericks to more wins than any other Division III team in New York State with 101 over that span, while ranking 17th in wins among DIII teams nationally during the same time frame. Before his stint at Medaille, he led the Canisius Golden Griffins to 108 wins during his time there – which ranks third in the program’s long  history in terms of coaching wins. He is also one of just five coaches all-time to put together a twenty-win season at Canisius, and was named the 200/2001 Basketball Coaches Association of NY Co-Coach of the Year. Prior to serving as the Griffins head coach, MacDonald served under Michigan’s John Beilein – who led Canisius to the 1996 NCAA Tournament.

Before the 2014/2015 season, MacDonald’s career record as a head coach sat at 256-226, with 68 of 69 total Seniors that he has coached reaching graduation over his 17 seasons as head coach.

This season as he takes over the reins at Daemen, he inherits a successful program which has won 68 games over the past three seasons – including a 35 game win streak at home. In 2013/2014, Daemen went 21-7 and won the regular season East Coast Conference Championship in the program’s first year as a Division II conference member.

Redband was between several schools before making his final decision, but in the end, Daemen seemed to be the way to go.

“I thought it was the best all-around fit for me to go there and it makes sense for me,” said Redband.

The Wildcats are currently 15-6 during the 2014/2015 season. They are 10-1 at home and have two scorers who are currently averaging over 20 points per game in Gerald Beverly (20.4) and Torrence Dyck (20.1).
