Welcome to the first edition of Batavia’s Worst. First off, let’s detail what the weekly article will usually entail. There’ll be a handful of  interesting stories from the national sports scene, whether it’s professional, amateur or recreational. Some will be funny, others will be not so funny. There’ll be the occassional NSFW video,  (don’t worry, it’ll never be anything too inappropriate) and maybe even a flashback Friday to an older story that happened the week or day the article will be posted.

Let’s kick it off with the first of three stories pertaining to referees.

Jump back to January of this year: St. Mary’s College vs. Sault High in a high school hockey game. A little scrum breaks out between the two teams. Next thing you know, a ref is getting the tar beat out of him by a handful Saint Mary’s players. The video from the incident finally hit the web yesterday.

It’s hard to see, because it’s barely in the frame, but you can clearly see the ref smack a player in the head. What was this guy thinking? Break up the fight. DO NOT put your hands on an athlete as a ref, especially if that athlete is a high school student. Literally no good is going to come from that; whether you’re the ref or the player. The kid’s father was told by their attorney to make the video public until his son was cleared, and the video clearly backs up his story that his son was not the catalyst. I am not sure if the ref is or is not Mike Milbury, though.

The next story isn’t nearly as serious as the last, but it does involve another ref.

Let’s travel to Midland Lee High School in Texas. The kicker is lining up for a standard extra point, and BAM! Off the refs head, off the crossbar and splits the uprights. What a kick. I want no part of playing that kid in horse.

I have two questions though. First, how does that kick count? Clearly wouldn’t have made it if the ref wasn’t there for the assist. And second, is that ref related to Jose Canseco?

Poor referees, always their fault for everything. Just when you thought it couldn’t get any worse, this happened:

Now, this story has been a big topic over the last few weeks. This has to be one of the most heinous acts I’ve seen in sports. The student-athletes are VERY fortunate that the referee wasn’t seriously injured, espcially after that second hit. Absolutely classless. The students were suspended from the team and school. The assistant coach who allegedly ordered the hit on the ref was fired. I wouldn’t be shocked if the coach and players were charged with assault and battery or reckless endangerment or something. The ref has been accused of using racial slurs towards the players, but it’s believed that the ref was hit for a few bad calls. The assistant coach supposedly stated that the “ref needed to be punished for cheating us.” When the players went on Good Morning America, they said the assistant coach told them to. When you’re in high school, you know the difference between right and wrong. Hold yourself accountable. You wouldn’t rob a bank if your coach told you to, would you? In the words of ESPN’s Tom Jackson, C’MON MAN!

Nope. This is why I don’t mess with sharks. The ocean is their turf. Fishing is a sneaky dangerous job, though. Ever watch Big Tuna or The Perfect Storm? Laying it all out on the line to make some serious cash, hoping you catch some fish or crabs or whatever sea creature you’re going after. Not only was he able to remain composed after getting back to land, but the man SWAM TO SHORE AFTER GETTING BIT. Talk about some onions. Fishing in the middle of the ocean, and then swims back to shore with who knows how many sharks around as blood is just coming out of his leg like a faucet.

Now, let’s move onto the sad joke of a franchise known as the Washington Redskins.

This man is mentally unstable to have the gumption to show up like that in public. No sane person thinks this is seriously a good idea.

A fan seriously dressed like this to the game last night. Seeing as how the team name is in scalding hot water right now, this probably wassn’t a wise move. I mean, blackface is controversial as it is, but redface?! That’s a bold move, Cotton.

And then the Redskins announced this…..

Hey! Come on down and pay $60 bucks for a photo with maybe the worst starting QB in the NFL!

I understand paid autograph and photo op sessions, but $60 TO GET A PICTURE WITH KIRK FREAKIN’ COUSINS?! I knew Daniel Snyder was a lunatic, but this might be his most insane move yet. I need to find out how many people actually show up for this.

Now let’s take it all the way back to the 2000 Summer Olympics.

This dunk is 15 years old today. Just one of many posters that Vinsanity has made in his career. He didn’t dunk on Frederic Weis, he dunked OVER him. Vince Carter is listed at 6’6″, Weis is listed at 7’2″. A former first round pick by the Knicks, Weis never played in the NBA. He stayed in Europe, which was a very smart move. The French media dubbed this “le dunk de la mort.” That translates to the dunk of death. In an ESPN article published by Michael Wallace and Rob Peterson, Weis had this to say;

“[Carter] deserves to make history. Sadly for me, I was on the video, too. I learned people can fly.”

Vince is still balling in the NBA, although he’s not dunking on people like he used to. Since retiring in 2011, Weis now provides television commentary for LNB Pro A, the top professional basketball league in France, and owns a tobacco shop with his wife.
