Here is a preview for today’s game:

Boys Class A2 Final – Batavia vs SOTA – 5:00 pm @ Blue Cross Arena

Top Players for SOTA

G – 5’8″ Sergio Alicea – About 20 ppg last I knew

C/F – 6’2″ Christian Simmons – About 20 ppg last I knew

What to watch for from SOTA

School of the Arts was the top-seed in Class A2 for some time during the early portion of the season, however, due to their weaker regular season schedule they wound up falling to #3 despite losing just two games. The Silverhawks have two primary scorers, as Sergio Alicea and Christian Simmons have worked together for much of the season in order to propel their team to such a great record.

Alicea is a shifty point guard who plays relatively passively at times in order to get his teammates involved, but possesses the ability to go off at any time. Look for him to have a big game both passing and scoring the ball tonight.

Simmons on the other hand is the Silverhawks’ bruiser. With a wide frame, plenty of strength, and the ability to finish layups through contact, I believe Simmons will be the biggest challenge for the Devils defensively.

In addition, SOTA also has a few shooters who will be total wild cards in this game. If they are able to get hot, Batavia could struggle to defend the Silverhawks as the floor will be spread wide open for Alicea to do his work with the basketball.

Prediction

Going into today’s game, I truly believe anything can happen. Although I believe the Blue Devils to be the better team with more capable options to choose from on each side of the ball, SOTA plays hard and will come into Blue Cross tonight looking to pull the upset. If the Blue Devils can limit Simmons to 15 or less, while holding Alicea to his average, I believe it will be a good night for the local team. However, if the dynamic duo for the Silverhawks gets going early – watch out.

All in all, I’m expecting a back-and-forth contest tonight. Having said that, I like the top seed here.

Final Score: Batavia 65 SOTA 60
