Rob Cusmano

Attica Football3rd season as head coach

Favorite thing about High School Sports: “The best thing about high school football is Friday night football. There is nothing better.”

The Blue Devils have started off the 2014 season extremely well, winning each of their first three games by considerable margins on their way to first place in the Genesee Region League. Head coach Rob Cusmano is in his third year building this Attica program and has found plenty of success as of late. Last night I communicated with coach Cusmano and got his thoughts on how things are going for him in the Blue and Orange.

AB: Being in first place, how important has it been for your team to remain focused each week?

RC: “We take one game at a time. The kids are always very focused and excited, especially this week when we play a team from outside the league. We never look ahead because on any given night, anybody and beat anybody.”

AB: During your film study this week, what have you taken away in terms of how Cardinal O’Hara will attack you offensively and defensively? Was there anything that stood out?

RC: “They are very fast and athletic so we have to control the ball, hang on to it, and be very physical. We can’t let them outside and must make sure we read our keys. If we do that we should be okay. ”

AB: How impressed have you been with Damien Marchetti’s progression at the quarterback position? He seems to be playing a nice role for you guys.

RC: “He is getting better every day and every week he is becoming a great leader (on the field). I am very proud of the fact that our kids work very hard and we have a lot of weapons on both sides of the ball.”

AB: Having the same staff for the past three seasons, what has it meant to you to be able to go out there on Friday nights with the same group of guys week in and week out?

RC: “I have a great staff and it means a lot to me. We are together 7 days a week. We all work very hard and trust each other.”

AB: Your brother is a part of your coaching staff, correct? What does it mean to you to go out there with him by your side every week?

RC: “Yes he is. He coaches the wide receivers and the defensive line, helps out with special teams, and is also in the booth on game days. It is great (coaching with him). We played together in high school and went to Cortland together (for college). We have been together our whole life coaching or playing sports.”

As you can see, it is a family affair for Cusmano and the Attica football program, who find themselves up against a difficult challenge this week. If they are to win and improve to 4-0 on the season, however, they will be sitting in fantastic shape to make a run at the League Title. Stay tuned!!
