With Bills DL Marcell Dareus locked up for 6-years beginning in 2015, and QB Tyrod Taylor now under contract for an extended period of time, the centerpieces of a future championship-caliber team are now in place. Will this potential be reached? Time will tell. But the Buffalo Bills are without a doubt trending upward as we approach the beginning of this season.

Now that Taylor and Dareus are here for the extended future, Stephon Gilmore in 2016, and then Sammy Watkins after 2017 are next in line for new contracts. And I believe if the Bills are able to sign those two guys while also continuing to receive solid production from Taylor and Dareus, Buffalo could begin to shape up as one of the top teams in the NFL in no time.

Now it certainly remains to be seen whether or not the Bills can indeed reach a deal with Gilmore, who almost held out during training camp, and Watkins, who will likely garner a large contract if allowed to hit the open market. But I believe the way in which the front office has been resigning their top-guys whenever given the chance in recent years (Incognito, Dareus, Taylor), and given how the franchise is now run by big-money owner Terry Pegula, I see no reason why the team’s core will not remain as is over the next several years.

Along with that fact, Buffalo’s ability to draft future starters is also beginning to improve in recent drafts, and as that process continues not only will the core of their roster continue to solidify, but their overall depth will also improve as a result.

The Bills are flying into the upcoming season relatively under the radar, and I’m unsure what to expect thus far. But with the bold moves made by the front office this offseason, it’s imperative that this team take a step forward – rather than a step laterally, or even worse backward.
