One of the biggest games of the year in GR Girls Basketball finished in favor of Oakfield last night, as the Hornets used a strong defensive effort, and dropped league foe Notre Dame by a final score of 51-43. Oakfield held the Irish to just 11 points in the first half, and led by as many as 17 in the second half.

“It was a game of momentum swings,” commented OA head coach Jeff Schlagenhauf following the big victory. “Defensively (tonight), we did an outstanding job in the first half.”

Offensively for the Hornets, Makayla Hilchey paced her team’s efforts with 18 points – 12 of which came during the second half. She also grabbed 9 rebounds. Kylie Schlagenhauf added 10 points, while Brianna Smith grabbed 10 rebounds for OA.

For the Irish in the loss, Callie McCulley led the team with 16 points, while Morgan Rhodes added 10 of her own.

“Notre Dame is an excellent basketball team (and) have strong forwards(with) excellent guards – and are very well coached,” Schlagenhauf continued. “They will definitely be a very tough team to deal with in the second half of the season.”

Notre Dame drops to 7-3, while Oakfield improves to 11-0.
