On Saturday morning, the Blue Devils and Lancers took the short drive to Albion High School in order to take part in their first organized scrimmage of the season. Each side walked away satisfied with their performance, but also acknowledged that there is still plenty to work on.

The scrimmage began with the Lancers and Blue Devils squaring off against one another, as both sides had some nice plays, and some plays to be forgotten. From what I saw, the running game was the most positive take-away for Batavia, while the interior of Elba’s offensive line seemed to be the most productive unit for the Lancers.

Despite both sides showing positive signs while lined up against one another yesterday afternoon, there were also a few situations which produced some cause for concern. For example, while Elba’s running game struggled to stretch the field to the outside against a strong Batavia front, Batavia missed a few big plays down the field in the passing game.

Apart from the few minor deficiencies, however, both sides showed plenty of promise during their time together.

“It went well, and we came out healthy which was the most important thing,” remarked Elba head coach Mike Cintorino at the conclusion of Saturday’s scrimmage. “We really limited our #1’s, as they only got about 15 total plays this afternoon, but we saw some good things, and some things to work on.”

Like Cintorino, Batavia head coach Brennan Briggs was also encouraged by his team’s performance yesterday.

“Today was a good day overall,” said Briggs, “We started off strong but still have a lot to work on. The kids got better today but we need to become tougher if we want to compete for a championship. No injuries today so that is always a great thing after the scrimmage.”

The Blue Devils’ head coach also spoke about a few individual performances which stood out to him on Saturday.

“Anthony Gallo did a great job running the ball , while James Cryer, Dominick Mogavero and Malachi Chenault also brought good things to the field,” Briggs said.

As you can see, each squad walked away encouraged with what they saw on both sides of the ball Saturday afternoon. With only one week of practice remaining in the 2014 preseason, excitement is building as the high school football season is upon us.
