The Elba Boys Basketball team was able to outlast a scrappy Hammondsport squad on Wednesday night, defeating the #9 seed by a score of 50-37. John Hochmuth was the driving force behind the Lancers big win, as the Junior was able to use a huge late-game effort in order to lead his team.
Elba led for the majority of the game yesterday after taking a 15-7 lead following the first quarter, and a 22-16 lead into the half, but during the third quarter Hammondsport was able to make a run using 4 three-pointers in order to take a brief lead. The deficit wouldn’t last long for the Lancers, however, as they wound up regaining the advantage at 34-30 heading to the final frame.
During the fourth, it was Hochmuth’s time. Behind 2 three-pointers, the Elba big man took over the game down the stretch – and almost single-handedly
vaulted his team into the next round.
Although foul trouble slowed him during the previous two quarters, like a man possessed, Hochmuth exploded over the game’s final minutes and finished with a total of 30 points for the game. Amazingly, the Junior scored 14 of his team’s 16 fourth quarter points – proving Hammondsport simply had no answer for him throughout the game, and especially as time winded down.
In the end Elba walked away with the 13-point win, and head coach Mark Beehler had plenty to say about his group’s performance following the game.
“We played well,” said Beehler. “We executed at times but at other times we couldn’t. We had a minor slump during the second and parts of the third quarter, but we switched to man-to-man going into the fourth and battled back.”
He also commented the fact the two teams were forced to play at a neutral site (Letchworth), instead of it being a home contest for Elba.
“It was unfortunate that what was supposed to be a home game was moved to Letchworth,” he began, “But the boys got the job done and moving on is all that matters. We hope to execute again for four quarters against Genesee Valley.”
The weekend matchup will be a tough one for the Lancers, as GV comes into the quarterfinals with an 18-1 record.
Stay tuned!!!
