On Tuesday several local teams took part in their first game of the Sectional season. Here is what took place:

Class C1 – #9 Pembroke 51 #8 Byron-Bergen 45

In a back-and-forth affair, the Dragons were able to overcome the higher-seeded Bees by the six-point margin, as Sophomore Ryan Cansdale continued his impressive second half to the season.

The Pembroke guard finished with 16 points on Tuesday, while also providing solid play throughout the night from the point. In addition to Cansdale, youngsters Kyle Ludwig and Zack von Kramer also contributed with strong performances for their team – each finishing with 10 points a piece.

Trailing 13-8 following the first quarter of play yesterday, Pembroke was able to use a strong defensive second quarter in order to vault themselves ahead of the Bees as they went into the halftime break. Holding the home team to just two points during the frame, the Dragons scored fourteen of their own and approached the locker room holding a seven-point advantage.

After the brief intermission, B-B was able to cut the deficit to only four points, but using a twenty-point fourth quarter the Dragons were able to put the game away and advance to the next round – where they will head to #1 Mynderse. The quarterfinal matchup will take place this Friday at 7:00 pm at Mynderse HS.

Class C1 – #7 Sodus 50 #10 Holley 35

Holley’s roller coaster of a season comes to an end with a difficult lost to Sodus. However, all accounts were that it was a fairly close game throughout.

Class C2 – #5 Kendall 54 #12 Alexander 34

As the Trojans and Eagles took to the floor on Tuesday night in front of a fairly sizable Kendall crowd, Alexander struggled to find their momentum offensively during the early going and fell by a large margin as a result. Ahead by six points after the first quarter, the home team was able to extend their advantage to an incredible eighteen-points as the two sides headed to the halftime locker room – which all but ended things for the Trojans.

Playing well for the Eagles was a trio of starters, as team leaders Will Condo and Deandre Nauden led the five-seed on both ends, while Evan Gaesser contributed a strong performance as well. Going forward, they now advance to play #4 Dundee in the quarterfinals, who destroyed Red Jacket last night.

Class C3 – #6 Oakfield 65 #11 Keshequa 39

Much like the previous matchup, this was never much of a contest.

Ahead by twenty one points after the first quarter, and an incredible thirty three after the second, Oakfield went on to win this one by an impressive amount which will likely give them some momentum going into their next matchup with #3 Wheatland-Chili on Friday night. The Hornets have played the Wildcats fairly tough this season and will likely bring another strong effort to the table in a few days. As far as their performance on Tuesday was concerned, head coach Ryan Stehlar had plenty to say about his Hornets.

“The team committed right away to the defensive end tonight,” he said concerning his team allowing just 9 points during the first half. “We knew coming in that they had more size than us with 6’4″ and 6’5″ post players. They also shoot the ball fairly well if given any room.”

Stehlar also spoke specifically on what he and his coaches saw on film that may give his group an advantage over Keshequa.

“Our main goal was to use our speed and constant help defense as a unit to find success early,” he began. “I felt this transitioned well into our offense and overall effort for the boys. It was a great team win.”
