I apologize for the timing of this post – but the Lady Devils finished their season a night ago in Canandaigua after falling to HFL in three sets. The Devils fought hard, but were unable to overcome the Cougars, who seem to be the favorite against an almost-equally as difficult Wayne team in the finals.
In the first set on Wednesday night, Batavia quickly fell behind 9-2 and were forced to take a timeout in hopes of forging some sort of comeback. Unable to get it together, however, the Devils would quickly call another timeout and with the score 11-2 things were starting bleak.
With several unforced hitting errors and a few mistakes along the way, Batavia dropped the first set 25-8 and switched sides looking for a spark.
Coming out of the break the Devils began to find their stride and immediately took the lead in the second set. Following their short-lived 2-1 lead, however, HFL quickly came back to tie the score at 4-4. The Cougars size and athleticism really helped them withstand any sort of wave from the Devils attack and allowed them to stay in the game despite a few rough patches.
The second set ended with another HFL victory, this time by a score of 25-10, and Batavia went into what could be the final set down 2 to none.
Unfortunately for the Devils, the final set ended the same as the previous two and they were out of the Sectional playoffs just before reaching the final round. Although they certainly didn’t perform up to their ability last night, Batavia may have been overmatched against an extremely talented HFL team who had beaten them previously during the regular season.
Making it to the semi-finals in Class B is no easy feat, however, and the Devils have plenty to be proud of this season. Tune in tomorrow for coverage of the Byron-Bergen Bees, Le Roy Knights, and Notre Dame volleyball teams, who all continue their quest for a championship.
