The Le Roy Football team dropped a close road affair to Hornell last night – falling to the Red Raiders 14-7 in overtime.

To begin the game between the Knights and Hornell neither team was able to muster any sort of offense throughout the first half – as each side would head to the halftime break with the game tied 0-0 following the first 24 minutes. However, using a 17-play drive to open the second half, Le Roy would finally get on the board.

Behind big-bodied running back Nick Egeling, Le Roy was able to drive right down the field immediately to begin the third quarter – scoring the first touchdown of the game with 3:13 left until the fourth quarter. Now, with the Knights ahead 7-0, the Red Raiders would take over in hopes of putting together their first successful drive of the day.

Able to do just that, Hornell would take just 2 plays on their next possession in order to tie the score, as the Raiders’ Trenton Smith took care of things himself by carrying the ball twice for 56 yards and a touchdown on the ensuing drive. Now, with the score tied at 7 with about 12 minutes to go, it was clear we were in for one heck of an ending to this game.

Despite each offense seemingly being able to find their rhythm in the third, though, both the Raiders and Knights each fell back into a lull offensively and were unable to score during  the remainder of regulation. Now, with the game still tied, we would head to overtime.

In high school overtime, the visiting team is given their selection of heads or tails on the coin toss, then whichever side wins the toss is able to choose whether they want the ball first or second. However, even if the team that takes the ball first scores immediately, the other side still gets a chance to extend the game with a possession of their own, and is given a chance to match the previous score. Make sense? Hope so.

Anyway, to begin overtime Hornell was able to drive right down the field and score a touchdown rather quickly. It was Smith again for the Raiders, as they had quickly taken a 14-7 lead over a Knights defense who hadn’t let up a point in 3/4 quarters already played.

On the ensuing possession, unfortunately for Le Roy, their offensive woes would continue and they found themselves faced with a 4th and long quickly into their overtime possession. On 4th down, the Knights dialed up a pass play to running back Nick Egeling but the pass fell incomplete and the game was over.

Final Score: Hornell 14 Le Roy 7.

In defeat, Egeling led all ball carriers for the Knights with an astounding 38 carries for 165 yards and a touchdown, while Josh Laurie had a tough day under center going 3/11 for 50 yards – with 2 completions going to Reed Kacur which totaled 38 yards.

For the Raiders, Trenton Smith led all rushers with 14 carries totaling 90 yards and the two touchdowns, while also going 1/1 through the air on a flea flicker early in the game which went for 34 yards.

Next up for the Knights (3-2) will be a rivalry matchup with Cal-Mum next week. Should be fun.
