LeRoy proved too much for Notre Dame on Saturday night, as the Oatkan Knights used a 26-point second quarter in order to rout the Irish 78-59. The victory must have been a bit more satisfying than normal for the Knights, as their second-year head coach Rick Rapone was able to take down his brother, Section V wins-leader Mike Rapone in their first matchup as head coaches. Leading LeRoy to the win in the brother’s first ever matchup were Nick Egeling, Kody Lamkin, and Mike McMullen, all of which recorded double-doubles in the game.

Although yesterday’s contest began with each side deadlocked after the first eight minutes, the Knights quickly sprung into action during the second quarter behind 3 three-pointers from Dylan Laney. LeRoy dominated the Irish by outscoring them 26-12 during the frame, and took a sudden 14-point lead into the halftime break.

Following the brief intermission, however, Notre Dame came out of the locker room swinging. Countering the Knights’ explosive performance during the second with an 18-point frame of their own, the Irish had cut the deficit to just ten points heading into the fourth quarter. Unfortunately for them, though, the Knights were able to answer.

LeRoy outscored Notre Dame 22-13 over the final eight minutes and eventually went on to win the game by an incredible 19-points. Throughout the final frame, the Knights used their size and strength advantage in the paint in order to pound the ball inside to Egeling and Lamkin who each scored 5+ points to close the deal in the fourth.

For the Knights, it was their first win since early December and improve to a 2-6 record as a result. Perhaps the victory meant more to Rick Rapone than just an increase in his team’s standing within the Livingston County League, however, as growing up with two brothers of my own, I understand what it’s like competing against your sibling. But to defeat someone so close to you on such a big stage, in front of friends and family, in such convincing fashion, it must have made it extra-special for LR’s coach Rapone on Saturday night.

In addition to the victory, LeRoy snapped Notre Dame’s 62-game home winning streak which had lasted for longer than five seasons.

Going forward, the Knights will look ahead to a matchup with Keshequa on Tuesday in hopes of furthering their climb up the LC Standings. For ND, they will face Division II leader Wheatland-Chili on Wednesday where they will be looking to reclaim their spot as one of the top teams in the GR Title race.

  1. Seems like Notre dame can’t hang with any teams In class C. Saw it against Avon and now against Leroy.

    • LeRoy is in the B2 Sectional Bracket, they are not a C school. And ND did hold a 14-point second half lead against A2 school U Prep in the Lions Club tourney. I would say your theory is flawed and you’re concentrating on two matchups instead of the big picture.
