Another successful weekend of Section V Championship Wrestling is in the books, as 10 local grapplers earned 2017-2018 Sectional Championships throughout Classes B, BB, and BBB. Of the 10, just two had previously won a Section V Wrestling Title, while eight earned championship hardware for the first time in their career.
In Class B, three wrestlers – all from Alexander – made the list of local champions.
At 113 lbs, the Trojans’ Mitch Gaiser defeated Kade Slayton of Avoca 3-0 in the title match. Gaiser, an eighth grader, was the only non-high school wrestler to earn a first place finish in Class B over the weekend.
Elsewhere for Alexander, Nick Young picked up his fourth-straight Section V Title, pinning Sheldon Gardner of Bolivar-Richburg at 132 lbs, while Dan Burns won 5-4 over Kristian Miller of Bolivar at 138 lbs.
Four Class BB grapplers finished with a title, all of which are first-time Section V Champions.
Issac Crane of Cal-Mum won at 106 lbs, defeating Muskan Mongar of Warsaw 7-6 in the finals. This championship match caused a bit of controversy, as the Tigers’ faithful seemed to believe Mongar was shorted a point near the end of the match. Nevertheless, the Raiders’ Crane was awarded the championship.
Le Roy’s Josh Englerth was the next local face to finish atop the podium, following a convincing 5-1 victory over Warsaw’s Noah Royce in the title match.
Holley/Kendall also had one of their wrestlers finish first, as Dylan Spellan pinned Canisteo-Greenwood’s Curtis Quick to win at 170 lbs. Spellan also pinned his opponent in the semifinals, making for one of the most-dominant runs to a championship that we saw this season.
The last local champ in Class BB was Mike Khomitch of Byron-Bergen, who also won by pin in his own finals match. Khomitch stuck Avon/Geneseo’s Isaiah Chisom for the title.
Finally, in Class BBB, Batavia/Attica saw three of their wrestlers finish with a championship in 2017-2018.
Mason Compton won his second-straight title at 152 lbs, dominating Bobby Billett of Wayne by a 13-1 major decision. Next in line was the Devils’ Blake Pariso, who beat Coty Bailey of Penn Yan 9-2 in the 160 lbs final. Lastly for Batavia/Attica, newcomer Josh Barber defeated Jake DeWall of Waterloo 6-5 in the 285 lbs final. This was Barber’s first year as a varsity wrestler.
All in all, it was an exceptionally successful weekend for area grapplers, as more than those listed above will join the champions at the Section V State Qualifier this week. Tune in later this week for a complete list of those who will compete this weekend at SUNY Brockport – where NYSPHSAA Championship berths will be on the line.
