Alexander couldn’t get anything going through the air on Saturday afternoon.

The Notre Dame Football team dropped Alexander on Saturday afternoon by a final score of 34-14. With the win, the Irish improve to 2-0, while the Trojans fall to 1-1.

Despite the lopsided final score, to begin yesterday’s game, it was Alexander who came out in control on both sides of the ball.

However, following the first quarter which at its conclusion the Trojans held an 8-0 lead, Notre Dame quickly began to seize control through a ground-and-pound style offensively, coupled with solid defense. In total on Saturday, the Irish rushed for 307 yards – their second-consecutive game eclipsing the 300 yard mark.

Jack Sutherland was a beast once again for the Irish.

To compliment the fierce running style that they displayed in their victory over the Trojans, Notre Dame also performed admirably on defense.

A key moment for the ND defense was late in the first half, when Alexander took the ball all the way down to the Irish 3 yard line with just seconds to go until the halftime horn. As they did all day long, though, the Irish stepped up with :16 to go, caused a fumble, recovered it, and kneeled out the clock in order to head to the locker room with a 12-8 lead intact.

The stop was a shocking one for both sidelines, albeit producing vastly disparate effects for either side.

For Notre Dame – the goal line stop seemed to energize them and gave their huddle all of the momentum heading into the halftime break.

For Alexander – failing to punch the ball in from just three yards out seemed to be the turning point in the game, killing any sort of momentum that the Trojans had.

Before it was ruled a fumble, Alexander believed they had scored a goal line touchdown to close out the first half.

Following the goal line stop, Notre Dame gained complete control for the remainder of the contest – outscoring the Trojans 22-6 throughout the second half, leading to the 20-point victory.

Sparking the Irish offense in their big win were the two ND running backs – Peter Daversa and Jack Sutherland.

Sutherland led the Irish on Saturday with 185 rushing yards to go with 3 touchdowns on the ground. Daversa also reached the end zone multiple times, scoring twice while rumbling his way to 104 rushing yards. CJ Suozzi led the Notre Dame defense with 9 tackles.

Aside from the Notre Dame ball carrier’s excellence in this one, the most-surprising stat to take away was ND’s total of zero passing yards – although they did convert a two-point conversion through the air.

Seemed as if every fan in attendance had an umbrella open on Saturday. I forgot mine….

For the Trojans, lead tailback Jake Wozniak put forth a strong effort in the loss – amassing 120 rushing yards on 20 carries, including a touchdown.

Trojans’ defensive end Josh Hylkema recovered a fumble for the other Trojan TD – which came off of a sack by Dustin Schmeider at the goal line. Dane Heberlein had 12 tackles to lead the Alexander defense, while Hunter Marzolf totaled 9 tackles of his own.

Next up for the Trojans will be a big game with Attica next week. The Irish will head to Elba/Byron-Bergen in Week 3.
