Following a successful year of Section V Wrestling, four local grapplers head to the NYSPHSAA Wrestling Championships this weekend hoping to further their accomplishments. In addition to the two wrestlers who won their individual weight class at the Section V State Qualifier – who each earned automatic bids to the NYSPHSAA Wrestling Championships – there were also two who were awarded wild card berths.

Of the four, Alexander’s Nick Young is the only one who is seeded in his respective weight class. Young comes in as the #2 overall wrestler at 132 lbs and will have a real chance to win a state championship. He will begin the tournament with a matchup with Alex Christian of Saranac (VII), but will have his sights set on #1 seed Cahal Donovan of Marcellus High School (III).

ICYMI: Alexander’s Nick Young finally in the spotlight as we approach the NYSPHSAA Wrestling Championships

The other local winner at the state qualifier, Batavia/Attica’s Josh Barber, comes in unseeded at 285 lbs and will face the #3 seed Le Roy Williams of Oneonta (IV) in his opening bout.

The two wild card bids – Isaac Crane of Cal-Mum (106 lbs), and Mason Compton of Batavia/Attica (152 lbs) – both have tall hills to climb towards title contention in their respective weight class.

Be sure to tune in this weekend on Twitter, where I will do my best to keep you updated on where all of the local participants wind up at this year’s NYSPHSAA Wrestling Championships.
