The Batavia Ice Devils dropped a heartbreaker to Geneseo over the weekend by a final score of 6-5 in overtime. Shining bright for Batavia in the loss were Bryce Polito and Connor Hyde-Hamilton, as Polito recorded a hat trick to pace the Ice Devils’ offense, while Hyde-Hamilton kept Batavia in the game by stopping 49 of 55 shots throughout the night – only to see the Batavia defense falter late in the game.

A scoreless contest after the first period, Batavia would take a sizable advantage during the second – as 3 Ice Devils goals (2 of which from Polito) vaulted them ahead 3-0 at the end of the first 30 mins of play.

To begin the third period, though, Geneseo was able to come back and light the lamp and cut the deficit to only two. But minutes later, Batavia would again find a spark offensively and rebound with a score of their own to increase their lead back to three at 4-1 (Polito’s third goal of the game). Following which, Geneseo would again score to push the tally to 4-2, however, minutes later it was Batavia again answering the bell to regain the three goal advantage (Cameron Ells) – and with just under 10:00 to play in regulation the score was 5-2 Ice Devils.

What came next was an ambush from Geneseo.

Scoring three goals over the next 5:00 of play, the Lakers came all the way back vs the Batavia defense – who had performed admirably up until then – and put home three goals in order to tie the score at 5-5 with five minutes to go in the third period. Despite the rush from their opponent, however, Batavia was able to settle down and take the tie game into overtime.

Unfortunately for the Ice Devils, though, Geneseo would continue their momentum into the extra session and score just 1:08 into OT as it was the Lakers’ Mitchell Walton with the game-winner.

Although it was an extremely impressive performance for much of the contest on Saturday, it all went for naught as Batavia was unable to finish and dropped a tough one to a tough Geneseo team.

Aside from impressive overall performances from both Polito and Hyde-Hamilton, Ells and Josh Hylkema also played well – each recording goals in the loss.

With the defeat, it seems as if Batavia will likely be set to face-off with Notre Dame in the first round of Sectionals.
