The first round is complete, and now 64 teams remain as the Section V Boys Basketball Tournament moves on to the Quarterfinals. Seven local squads have survived to this point, while the other seven have been eliminated.

Moving forward, I’ll keep you updated on each classification, with an increased focus on the local teams which are still alive.

Here is an updated look at the Section V Boys Basketball Tournament as we approach the Quarterfinal Round. All brackets are via the Section V Boys Basketball website:

Class AA

Updated Seeding: 1. Fairport; 2. Rush-Henrietta; 3. Gates-Chili; 4. Webster Thomas; 5. McQuaid; 6. University Prep; 7. Hilton; 8. Bishop Kearney; 9. Edison Tech; 10. Penfield; 11. Churchville-Chili; 12. Victor; 13. Webster-Schroeder; 14. Aquinas

First Round Recap: We saw a big upset in round one, as #13 Webster Schroeder overcame rival #4 Webster Thomas. Aside from that it was pretty chalky. Five of the other seven top-eight seeds advanced to the quarterfinals, while #9 Edison Tech over #8 Bishop Kearney was the only other upset in this classification, and #1 Fairport was given a first round bye.

Intriguing Quarterfinal Matchup: #3 Gates-Chili vs #6 University Prep – Gates beat U Prep by four during the regular season. The rematch is sure to be another close one.

 Class A1

Updated Seeding: 1. Greece Athena; 2. Irondequoit; 3. Pittsford Sutherland; 4. Pittsford Mendon; 5. Eastridge; 6. Canandaigua; 7. Spencerport; 8. Brockport; 9. Brighton; 10. Greece Arcadia; 11. Franklin

First Round Recap: Aside from #8 Brockport, who was upset by #9 Brighton in round one, the other two top-eight seeds to play during the first round (Spencerport, Canandaigua) advanced to the quarterfinals.

Intriguing Quarterfinal Matchup: #3 Pittsford Sutherland vs #6 Canandaigua – Sutherland has beaten Canandaigua twice this year, but the Knights’ two wins over the Braves came by three points, and one point. The door is open for an upset.

Class A2

Updated Seeding: 1. Leadership Academy; 2. Wayne; 3. Batavia; 4. NE Douglas; 5. Wilson Magnet; 6. Honeoye Falls-Lima; 7. Monroe; 8. SOTA; 9. East High; 10. Geneva; 11. Vertus

First Round Recap: #9 East High over #8 SOTA (by 50?!) was the only upset in round one. Once again, nothing much to see here.

Intriguing Quarterfinal Matchup: #3 Batavia vs #6 Honeoye Falls-Lima – Batavia and HF-L split two previous meetings during the regular season, with both teams winning at home. The Blue Devils are home once again for the third matchup, but this one has a trip to the semifinals on the line.

Class B

Updated Seeding: 1. Mynderse; 2. Penn Yan; 3. Livonia; 4. Hornell; 5. Greece Odyssey; 6. World of Inquiry; 7. Palmyra-Macedon; 8. Wellsville; 9. Newark, 10. Wayland-Cohocton; 11. Midlakes; 12. Bath-Haverling; 13. Dansville; 14. Waterloo; 15. Greece Olympia; 16. Attica

First Round Recap: Two big upsets hit Class B during the first round: #10 Wayland-Cohocton over #7 Palmyra-Macedon, and #11 Midlakes over #6 World of Inquiry.

Both teams were able to score the ball at will in their respective wins, with Way-Coh coming close to 100 points – which still would have been less than #1 Mynderse’s 109 opening round points. #5 Greece Odyssey also looked on-point earlier this week, dropping 81 in their opening round win over Bath-Haverling.

Intriguing Quarterfinal Matchup: #4 Hornell vs #5 Greece Odyssey – Although it’s minor, this is my upset special in Class B. The Leopards play a tough schedule all year and are ready to advance through the Red Raiders.

Class C1

Updated Seeding: 1. Northstar Christian; 2. Pembroke; 3. Addison; 4. Le Roy; 5. Marcus Whitman; 6. Avon; 7. Gananda; 8. East Rochester; 9. Sodus; 10. Canisteo-Greenwood; 11. Byron-Bergen; 12. Williamson; 13. Early College; 14. Red Creek; 15. Holley; 16. North Rose-Wolcott; 17. Letchworth

First Round Recap: There isn’t much to write about in Class C1. All eight of the top-seeds advanced to the quarterfinals, which is not a surprise. There wasn’t a team below the #9-seed with a plus-.500 record.

Intriguing Quarterfinal Matchup: #2 Pembroke vs #7 Gananda – Pembroke was upset at home by Gananda two seasons ago in the first round of the Sectional Tournament. The Dragons haven’t forgotten that game, as a few of the players from that year’s squad still remain on this year’s team.

Class C2

Updated Seeding: 1. Perry; 2. Cal-Mum; 3. Lyons; 4. C.G. Finney; 5. Oakfield; 6. Alexander; 7. Cuba-Rushford; 8. Rochester Academy; 9. Bloomfield; 10. South Seneca; 11. Warsaw; 12. Geneseo; 13. Red Jacket; 14. Rochester Prep; 15. Campbell-Savona; 16. Marion; 17. Keshequa

First Round Recap: Two Livingston County teams upset two Genesee Region teams in round one. #5 Oakfield, and #6 Alexander had enjoyed successful years within their league, but could not overcome their LCAA opponents this week. On the other side of the coin, #12 Geneseo, and #11 Warsaw look forward to the quarterfinals where they will once again serve as underdogs hoping to pull the upset. #2 Cal-Mum continued their strong play, as they put up 88 points in their victory over #15 Campbell-Savona.

Intriguing Quarterfinal Matchup: #2 Cal-Mum vs #7 Cuba-Rushford – Cuba-Rushford pulled an upset in the Class C3 title game a season ago, while Cal-Mum fell as a favorite in the 2016-2017 Class C2 title game. The Red Raiders are the better team this year, and are seeded as such. Although, the Rebels proved last season that they’re capable of anything.

Class D1

Updated Seeding: 1. Clyde-Savannah; 2. Notre Dame; 3. Genesee Valley; 4. HAC; 5. Mt. Morris; 6. Honeoye; 7. York; 8. Fillmore; 9. Jasper-Troupsburg; 10. Naples; 11. Bolivar-Richburg; 12. Alfred-Almond; 13. Lyndonville; 14. Pavilion; 15. Wheatland-Chili; 16. Dundee; 17. Kendall

First Round Recap: The upsets in Class D1 came courtesy of #10 Naples, and #13 Lyndonville, who defeated #7 York, and #4 Harley-Allendale-Columbia respectively, in round one. The Tigers trailed by 13 at halftime of their win over HAC, and forged an inspiring comeback down the stretch to push themselves to the quarterfinals. It took two overtimes for Naples to win their game over York, but hey, they’ll take it, as they are also on to the next round. #2 Notre Dame takes on the Big Green in the next round after an 18-point victory over Wheatland-Chili in round one.

Intriguing Quarterfinal Matchup: #5 Mt. Morris vs #11 Lyndonville – Lyndonville pulled a major upset in round one, and will be riding a wave of momentum into this matchup with Mt. Morris. The Tigers endured a disappointing GR League season, but seemed to come together down the stretch and turned that into a surprising sectional victory earlier in the week. Do you they have another one in them?

Class D2

Photo credit: the Section V Basketball website

Updated Seeding: 1. Prattsburgh; 2. Belfast; 3. Scio; 4. Elba; 5. Avoca; 6. Bradford; 7. Whitesville; 8. Hammondsport; 9. Romulus; 10. Lima Christian; 11. Andover; 12. Houghton; 13. Friendship; 14. Arkport-Canaseraga

First Round Recap: #10 Lima Christian over #7 Whitesville was the only surprise in the first round within Class D1. There isn’t much else to take away from the first round.

Intriguing Quarterfinal Matchup: #4 Elba vs #5 Avoca – Elba has played well up to this point in the year, but Avoca will be one of the toughest teams that they’ve faced to date. Will the Lancers once again pass this test with flying colors?
