With the regular season now complete, the 2018 Section V Boys Soccer Playoffs begin today, as the nine local teams within our coverage area all have hopes of surviving, and advancing. Here is a brief preview of each classification:

CLASS B1

Batavia (4-11-1) is the lone local squad competing for the title in Class B1, a classification which was dominated by #1 Greece Odyssey (13-3-0), and #2 Pal-Mac (13-3-0) during the regular season. However, behind Matt Grover’s 10 goals and 3 assists, the Blue Devils put together a respectable year in what was a tough league – which featured an upset win over the #1 Leopards late in the regular season. The Devils will take on #8 Newark in the pre-quarterfinals tomorrow night.

CLASS B2

Attica (5-11-0), and Le Roy (9-4-3) each will compete for the title in Class B2.

Le Roy comes in as the #4 team, and has two elite scorers on their roster in Ethan Smith and Roan Mallaber – both of whom scored 16 goals and added 11 assists this year. Le Roy faces a high-scoring World of Inquiry squad who comes in as the #5 team in Class B2, and a defending Section V Champion.

#8 Attica has a pre-quarterfinal matchup with #9 Wayland-Cohocton tomorrow night, and the Blue Devils will look to their defense to lead the way – as they’ve had trouble finding the back of the net this year. Quincy Burg is their leading-scorer with 5 goals and 2 assists.

CLASS C1

Byron-Bergen/Elba (13-3-0)Holley (9-5-2)Pembroke (3-13-0), and Pavilion/York (1-15-0) are the four locals who will battle it out in Class C1.

Byron-Bergen/Elba is the defending Section V Class C Champion, and pulled the #3 seed heading into the postseason – where they will first matchup with #15 Red Creek in the pre-quarterfinals. The Bees have been blessed with a long list of capable scorers this season, as Wade Thompson (16 goals, 9 assists), Sam Pringle (15 goals, 4 assists), and Kyle Foeller (9 goals, 13 assists) have all taken turns leading their team in 2018.

Matt Wilson has been the top-player for #6 Holley this season, netting 16 goals to go with 9 assists for the Hawks – who face-off with #11 North Rose-Wolcott tomorrow in the pre-quarterfinals.

Both #13 Pembroke (vs #4 East Rochester) and #14 Pavilion/York (vs #3 Sodus) have had trouble scoring this season, and will face uphill battles in their pre-quarterfinal matchups.

CLASS C2

Finally, in Class C2 Wheatland Chili (7-9-0), and Cal-Mum (7-9-0) are the last two local teams hoping for a surprise run at a title this year.

The #8 Wildcats will face #9 Campbell-Savona in the pre-quarterfinals, and have been led by David Domina’s 6 goals and 4 assists this season.

#7 Cal-Mum takes on #10 Harley-Allendale-Columbia in the pre-quarters. Kevin Goodhue (16 goals, 3 assists) has been the top-scorer for the Red Raiders this year, but they’ve also received quality contributions from Jacob Burneyy (8 goals, 9 assists), Shane McClurg (6 goals, 10 assists), and Sebastian Kresge (5 goals, 8 assists).

Stay tuned for stats and scores throughout the postseason.
