The 2018 Section V Girls Soccer Playoffs begin today with 13 local teams that reside within our coverage area all fighting for a chance at a title. Here is a brief preview of each classification:

CLASS B1

Batavia (7-7-2), and Lyndonville/Medina (5-11-0) are the only two local teams in Class B1.

Batavia has been led by junior forward Katie Moore, who has scored 20 goals to go with 4 assists this season. Katie has been a top-12 scorer in Section V this year and I believe she will give her team the opportunity to pull off an upset in the quarterfinal round. The #6 Blue Devils will face the #3 Pal-Mac Red Raiders later this week.

Pacing Lyndonville/Medina this season has been freshman forward Ella Lewis, and senior midfielder Anna Lewis – both of whom have accumulated over 10 points thus far in 2018. Ella leads the team in goals with 7, while Anna is right behind her with 5 goals this season. #8 L/M has been handed a pre-quarterfinal matchup with #9 Geneva (1-15), a game which will be played tonight.

CLASS B2

There are also just two local squads competing for the Class B2 Title, as Attica (3-12-1), and Le Roy (9-7-0) are both ranked near the bottom of the standings.

The Knights have already clinched a quarterfinal berth behind the efforts of sophomore forward Bryn Luckey, who has scored 20 goals, and added 3 assists this season. Like Batavia’s Moore, Luckey has been a top-12 goal scorer in Section V this season and should give her team a chance to advance past #3 Livonia (8-5-3) in the quarterfinals.

Attica has a tall task ahead of them in their pre-quarterfinal matchup with #7 Wellsville (7-9-0). Stats were not reported for the Blue Devils this season.

CLASS C2

There were no local teams in Class C1, but there are five in Class C2: Byron-Bergen (11-4-1)Holley (8-5-3)Oakfield/Elba (5-9-2), Pembroke (4-10-2), and Alexander (2-11-3).

Byron-Bergen has been propelled by Miriam Tardy, and Kelsey Fuller this season – both of whom chipped in over 40 points during the team’s regular season. Tardy led the team with 18 goals while adding 6 assists, and Fuller led the team in assists with 13 while chipping in 15 goals. The #3 Bees take on the winner of #6 Red Jacket and #11 Campbell Savona in the quarterfinals later this week.

Sophomore forward Halee Passarell, and junior forward Olivia Radford have been the two leading-scorers for Holley, who comes in as the #4 team in Class C2. Passarell has scored 10 goals this year, which leads the team, while Radford netted 9 goals during the regular season and both are capable of leading this team to a semifinals berth next week. The Hawks journey begins with #13 Cuba-Rushford (1-14).

#7 Oakfield/Elba, and #10 Alexander will square off in a pre-quarterfinal matchup tonight. OA/E’s top-scorer this season has been junior forward Kelly Mickey, who has 12 goals and 4 assists on the season. Mickey, along with second leading scorer Brenna Ilacqua (7 goals, 4 assists), will look to lead their team past Alexander, who has had trouble finding the net this season. Senior forward Macie Riggs leads the Trojans in goals with 3.

Finally, #9 Pembroke will take on #8 Bloomfield in the pre-quarterfinals for a chance to take on Class C2 #1 Marion in the quarterfinal round. Only four players have scored for the Dragons this year, but all have done a nice job spreading the wealth. Sophomore forward Serene Calderon, sophomore forward Skye Magoffin, sophomore forward Montana Dieter, and junior forward Hannah Clark have all accumulated over 10 points this year and hope to do enough to advance past the first round.

CLASS C3

Wheatland-Chili (14-2-0), Cal-Mum (6-10-0), and Pavilion (0-15-1) are the three local squads in Class C3.

Wheatland-Chili earned the top-seed yet again, after finishing as NYSPHSAA Champions last year. Sophomore forward Niyah Rosado has been the top-producer for the Wildcats this year, as she finished the regular season with 24 goals and 13 assists. Lindsey Clar has done a solid job complimenting Rosado, and recorded 10 goals and 12 assists during the regular season. Senior goalkeeper Janae Hooker has been one of the top-goaltenders in the local area, and has stopped over 90% of the shots fired at her this season.

The winner of #8 Cal-Mum vs #9 Harley-Allendale-Columbia will face the top-seed Wildcats in the quarterfinals. If the Red Raiders are to make it that far it will likely be Bri Raniewicz (10 goals, 2 assists) leading the way – as the junior forward has been the leading-scorer for C-M this year.

I would expect W-C to have a good chance to repeat as Section V, Far West Regional, and perhaps even NYSPHSAA champs.

CLASS D1

Notre Dame (8-7-1) is the lone local team in line for the Class D1 title.

The #6 Irish will take on #3 Avoca/Bradford in the quarterfinals later this week, and will look to senior forward Callie McCulley and sophomore forward Ava Reinhart to lead them to the upset. McCulley has led the team with 11 goals and 5 assists this year, while Reinhart has been right behind her with 8 goals and 3 assists during the regular season.

Stay tuned for stats and scores throughout the postseason.
