The Pembroke Girls Basketball team held their annual Shooting for a Cure fundraiser on Thursday night in hopes of generating thousands of dollars which they will donate today to cancer research. Through their effort, the Lady Dragons and friends were able to raise a total of $9019.67 in the name of the Roswell Park Alliance Foundation and also produced invaluable exposure for such a worthy cause.

“The gym was packed,” said Pembroke head coach Ron Funke following the game, and as I viewed photos on social media, I felt as if I began to understand the magnitude of what the game must have meant to the respective teams and their families.

Even in defeat, the visiting team’s head coach, Holley’s Justin Tese, also spoke about the atmosphere and simply what it meant to be welcomed into such a great event.

“The game itself provides a wonderful platform to bring people together for this worthy and wonderful cause,” he began. “Just being a part of the event is a reward in and of itself. At the end of the cay, you always want to win, but the box score takes a back seat to the greater-good and as long as we keep raising money for cancer research, the winners extend far beyond the court. On behalf of Holley, I extend our thanks to the Pembroke family for welcoming us tonight.”

Congratulations to the Lady Dragons and everyone who was involved in such a fantastic effort!!
