The 2015 Batavia Football Team is a prime example of why sports are so great.

A team that never quit. A city that never quit.

Boy was it fun to watch.

Following a Sectional Championship season for the Blue Devils a season ago, their first in some 20 seasons, much was expected of this bunch as we entered a new year. A new opportunity.

But despite the high expectations and heavy burden that usually accompany such lofty sights, the Blue Devils delivered this year. In a big way.

Not only were they able to repeat as Section V Class B Champions, the first team in school history to do so, this 2015 Batavia team was also able to finish the regular season undefeated – outscoring their opponents 287-98 along the way – which are two feats I’m not sure will ever be accomplished again at BHS.

However, despite the gaudy numbers, the unblemished regular season record, and the near State Final Four appearance, the 2015 Batavia Football Team’s most impressive characteristic was the fact that they were just that.

A team.

A team which worked together, a team which won together – a team which came together. This group played for nothing but each other, and this fact was apparent during each Friday night from September – November this year. And that will always be their calling card.

Going forward, although this season will eventually fade into the history books, and much of what this team accomplished this season will finally be covered up by new memories created by a now thriving Batavia Football program, one thing remains certain – this team was special.

Now, I have been around Batavia football for a long time. Since the days of coach Sanfratello, when I was a water boy for a team led by one Brennan Briggs at quarterback, and Bobby Darch at running back, to my short stint as a modified football coach at Batavia in 2014 before I was let go just weeks into practice (it was my fault) – I have seen it all from a Batavia Football fan’s point of view. However, I have never seen anything like what I saw from this team, and this city, this season.

In short, it was incredible.

Week, after week I would witness a fan base, massive in size and even more massive in the amount of love they gave their team on the field, rise together in support of their Blue Devils with such ferocity that I have never witnessed in all these years. A sight to see to say the least.

So in closing, to point out the obvious, this team has everything to be proud of following a great career in the Blue and White. Championships, trophies, awards, records… the 2015 Batavia Football team had it all.

And they won’t soon be forgotten.
