The reason why your favorite sport or favorite team doesn’t get any coverage

Dating back to the first month of Batavia’s Best existence a few years ago, I have consistently received complaints from parents and players concerning lack of coverage for certain sports/teams in the area. Up until this point I have done my best to ignore those complaints in hopes of not throwing anyone under the bus. However, as those complaints start to rack up and intensify, I feel it is now time to enlighten all those who are wondering why their son/daughter/team is not provided with the coverage they deserve.

Upon beginning this website I sought out the assistance from the various athletic directors and coaches in the local area in order to provide each school and team with the most-thorough coverage possible – as in my opinion, proper coverage had lacked in the area for many years prior to the beginning of Batavia’s Best. In other words, the local paper just wasn’t cutting it – and really still isn’t. But that’s a story for a different day.

Upon requesting assistance from these ADs and coaches, about 90% of them were excited about the prospect of their team/school acquiring further coverage and exposure for their student athletes. Which was great.

Then their were the other 10%. The other 10%, from the very beginning of the process, have been incredibly resistant in providing the minor assistance that I have requested. Which has made matters difficult for me.

Due to this fact, it was this year that I decided I will no longer seek out information for specific teams in order to provide them with coverage – it was simply taking too much time, and it wasn’t fair to other coaches who go out of their way to help me on a nightly basis. Therefore, throughout the 2015-2016 season, I have limited our coverage to those teams who want to be involved with Batavia’s Best. Nothing more, nothing less.

The coverage process is a two-way street.

When I was a coach, in the coaches handbook, there was a section dedicated to ‘interacting with the media’ or something to that affect. It’s a shame, albeit a small percentage of them, but it’s a shame that some of the coaches in the area have taken this section of their job (that they are paid to do) so lightly. In the end, I never ask for much from the coaches or ADs – so really there is no excuse for them not to participate.
