Three of our local teams advanced to the Section V Finals last night after victories over their respective semifinal opponents. Here is what took place:

Class A2 – Mendon 57 Batavia 43 – Lady Devils start fast, cannot maintain momentum

batavia vs mendon girls basketballBatavia played a fairly good first half on Wednesday night, as they were leading 19-17 following the first quarter, but after falling behind by one at the half they were unable to come back.

Going into the break Batavia trailed 26-25, but after the third quarter Mendon had increased their advantage to five points as the score sat at 37-32.

As I arrived at the game with about 6:00 left, it was apparent that the Vikings seemed to have sustained the momentum they had gained during the third quarter – and eventually went on to win the game by the fourteen-point margin.

The game was much closer than the scoreboard indicated from what I could tell, however, and after falling to Mendon earlier this season the Lady Devils performed well last night.

Class C1 – Byron-Bergen 52 Gananda 48 – Bees #5 seed Mynderse in the Finals on Saturday @ 1 pm

The Bees put together yet another fine performance on Wednesday night, as they were able to drop the Blue Panthers in a close game in order to advance to the C1 Finals.

Next up for the Bees will be a tough Mynderse team, who previously defeated the #1 seed in C1 (East Rochester) 67-18.

Tough may be an understatement.

Class C2 – Cal-Mum 52 Geneseo 44 – Red Raiders will face #1 Dundee in the Finals on Saturday @ 3

On Wednesday night, the Red Raiders used a huge run during the third quarter in order to overcome a scrappy Geneseo team who pushed them to the brink.

At the end of the run that put C-M ahead for good, the Raiders found themselves with a 40-31 lead when the third quarter horn sounded. During the fourth, Cal-Mum was able to sustain their advantage until the final seconds ticked off the clock – winning the game by eight points.

Dundee will be waiting for them in the Finals, who previously defeated Letchworth in the other semifinal in C2.

Class C3 – Bolivar 46 Wheatland-Chili 41 – Wildcats hang around, cannot turn corner down stretch

Going down 9-0 following the first few minutes of the game last night, things looked extremely bleak for the Wildcats.

However, as they have all season long, this team continued to battle and was able to stay in the game all the way up until the final buzzer – eventually losing by five.

Class D1 – Elba 68 Arkport 35 – Lancers dominate from very start – Face J-T tomorrow at 8 pm

After taking a 14-3 lead with four minutes to go in the first quarter last night, the Lancers continued to pour it on throughout the remainder of the game – winning by 33.

Next up for the Lancers will be a tough Jasper-Troupsburg team who previously defeated #1 Romulus in the last round.
