The Wheatland-Chili Boys Basketball team used a huge second half in order to work their way past a tough Le Roy team on Tuesday night. Leading the Wildcats were Rodney Roberts and his brother Tyler, who scored 33 and 20 points respectively. Amazingly, Rodney made it to the free throw line 24 times, converting 16 of them on his way to a career night.

Tuesday’s game began with each side playing well offensively as the score sat at 15-all at the first break. As expected the Knights were extremely physical on the defensive end during the early going, as they sent the Wildcats to the line six times during the first eight minutes. Not allowing their shooters to get easy looks without contact, Wheatland was relatively held in check throughout the quarter.

However, the Wildcats would break out during the second behind their leading scorer. Out of the 22 points that Wheatland scored during the frame, Roberts contributed 14 of them and put his team ahead 37-32 going into the halftime intermission.

In the second half it was more of the same for the Wildcats. Roberts continued his onslaught of the Knights’ defense while being joined by his brother Tyler – who ended up with 18 of his 20 points during the second half as Wheatland began to pull away.

When it was all said and done, it turned out to be a 75-60 victory for the Wildcats as they had eclipsed 70 points for the second consecutive game. Even when put up against a defensively-sound team such as the Le Roy Knights, Wheatland found a way to score the ball excessively, leading to their easy victory.

To go with their impressive point totals on Tuesday, Rodney and Tyler Roberts also contributed in other ways for their team. Rodney finished with 13 rebounds, 4 assists and 3 steals, while Tyler wound up with 6 rebounds and 5 steals of his own. Along with the two Roberts boys, Justin McLendon also had a fine night for the Wildcats, scoring 13 points spread over the four quarters.

For Le Roy, Nick Egeling (6 rebs) led the Knights’ offensive effort with 18 points, while Dave Englerth (13 rebs) and Josh Laurie each scored 10 a piece. Mike McMullen also chipped in 6 points, 7 rebounds, 3 assists, and 3 steals.

Next up for Wheatland (2-0) will be Attica on Thursday night. For Le Roy (1-2), they will meet Perry on Friday.
