The first place team in the GR league played like it on Friday night, as the Attica Blue Devils withstood a tough Alexander football team, winning the game 21-9. The victory marks the third straight for the Devils, as they look forward to their matchup with Cardinal O’Hara out of Section VI next week.

In a game where Attica’s best offensive player did not play, the Blue Devils sure made a believer out of me as they were able to outlast a gritty Alexander team over the course of four quarters. Missing lead running back Jake Strzelec for the entirety of Friday’s game versus the Trojans, Attica was able to pick up the slack and win the game.

Going ahead by 2 scores late in the first half following a touchdown pass from Attica QB Damien Marchetti to Levi Snyder, the Blue Devils seemed to be on their way to another easy victory. However, with the clock ticking down under a minute Alexander was able to score on a trick play, as Sam Browne hit Jacob Riggs on the outside for a long touchdown pass. With the score sitting at 14-6 as the two teams went into the half, the Trojans were right where they wanted to be – within striking distance.

Scoring slowed for a while as the second half began, but late in the third quarter, Zack Shilvock was able to connect on a 45-yard field goal to push the score to 14-9 Attica. Following the field goal however, Attica was able to put another touchdown on the board following an interception with about 3:00 to go in the game. When the final buzzer sounded, the Blue Devils had won the game by 12 and were moving to 3-0.

“We played great even without Jake today,” said Attica head coach Rob Cusmano last night. “We sat him tonight, and it killed me, but I am happy we did it”
