Twenty five turnovers killed the Batavia Boys Basketball team as they fell to Irondequoit last night by a final score of 51-30. Playing relatively uninspired ball from the opening tip, with no one there to stop the bleeding, the Blue Devils gave way to the Eagles early-on and simply never recovered – losing the game by a lopsided 21 points.

This marks the third loss for the Blue Devils vs the top-three teams on their schedule including U Prep, Greece Arcadia, and Irondequoit – leaving questions as to what kind of a team this really is.

Beginning the season undefeated, and currently at 9-4 and the top seed in Section V Class A2, Batavia has overcome each and every team that they were supposed to this season, and have fallen to each team that was expected to be at their level or above. Which is not a good sign for a team with championship aspirations.

When it comes down to it, along the road of a championship run, sometimes you need to beat teams that are as good or better than you in order to advance – and from what we’ve seen from the Blue Devils thus far is that they have been unable to do so. For whatever reason, each and every time they have been faced with a steep challenge such as UP, Greece, or Irondequoit – they have crumbled (with the exception of maybe GA when the game went down to the wire).

Going forward, if this group hopes to achieve what they set out to at the start of the season, it is imperative that they begin to play with the emotion and grit that it takes to become a championship team.

Otherwise, they’re doomed.
