Here are my selections for Underclassman, and Underclasswoman, of the Year from this past boys and girls basketball season:

Owen Thompson – Sophomore – Attica Boys Basketball

Owen Thompson 2Not only was Owen the top underclassman throughout the Genesee Region this season, but he also was up there with the top players in the league – regardless of grade.

Averaging 19.2 points during the 2014/2015 season, Thompson led his team to a top-three finish within GR Division II, highlighted by a victory over eventual DII champ Wheatland-Chili late in the season.

Going forward, I expect the Sophomore forward to only get better as he gains experience throughout the next couple of years.

Congratulations to Owen – our Batavia’s Best Boys Basketball Underclassman of the Year.

Gillian Flint – Cal-Mum Girls Basketball – Class C2 Sectional Champion

flintPicking up coverage of the Cal-Mum Girls Basketball team midway through the season, I quickly became impressed with their Sophomore sensation Gill Flint. The Raiders’ guard finished the season averaging 17 points per game, and her performance in her team’s Sectional Final game was as clutch as they come.

Time after time, it seemed, Flint came through for the Red Raiders against a tough Dundee squad – who they eventually defeated 46-42 in order to earn the C2 Title.

Congratulations to Gill – our Batavia’s Best Girls Basketball Underclasswoman of the year.
