The Byron-Bergen Boys Basketball team came back to defeat a tough Lyndonville squad on Friday night, seizing victory in a game where they were at one point down ten points during the third quarter. Steele Truax was once again a force against the Tigers, as well as Nick Magin and Brandon Burke, who each scored over 20 points for the Bees en route to their team’s emotional win.

“I couldn’t be more proud of the boys tonight,” said B-B head coach Chad Smith following the game. “It was a total team effort and it’s fun to share this with the kids. They have earned everything they have gotten thus far.”

On Friday things didn’t begin with much promise for the Bees. Down by ten points late during the third quarter, Byron-Bergen would dig deep within themselves and muster one final push in order to forge a comeback. Leading the charge for the Bees was Steele Truax who, according to his coach, carried his team throughout the night on both ends.

Draining 3 big three-pointers down the stretch, Truax got his team right back into the game after being down by double-digits. However, Truax soon became the first of three B-B players to foul out during the game which forced the Bees to adjust. Without their best player, they would get contributions from Nick Magin and Brandon Burke (Burke also fouled out eventually) as the game pressed on, and found themselves with just a three-point deficit as three seconds remained in regulation.

With the ball out of bounds underneath the basket, Smith called for a Byron-Bergen timeout in order to draw up an out of bounds play for Jordan Coffta – who drained the biggest shot of his life.

Following a sound head-fake in order to lift the defender from his feet, Coffta found an opening and launched a deep three which ripped through the twine in order to tie the game. As the two sides prepared for OT, Byron-Bergen would be doing so without three of their starters, including Burke and Truax, who had fouled out for the game.

Down the stretch the Bees had multiple bench players fill increased roles in order to walk away with the 87-79 win.

Especially impressive was Sophomore Derek Cooper, who was recently called-up after spending the start of the year on JVs, and finished the night with 12 points while scoring 6 of his total during the overtime period.

“Credit Lyndonville for a strong performance,” continued Smith after the game. “They are a tough team who is well-coached. He (Lyndonville head coach) is a great guy and fun to compete against. Just proud of my guys.”

Aside from the great comeback on part of the Bees, the Tigers’ Nick Hinkson and Brandon Schoolcraft each dropped 20 points in an impressive showing.

With the win, the Bees (4-1) remain with firm grasp of first place in GR Division I. Their next matchup will come against a tough Le Roy team on December 23rd. Lyndonville (3-3) will move on to Holley on December 30th.
